    Gardening Question...@#&+ING WEEDS!

Everyone who has a backyard knows of the wonders of it's maintenance, and here in South Florida (with a 12 month a year "season") the task is never ending. Be it known that I despise yardwork, and miss apt./condo living greatly for this. Other than growing dope in my youth, I've strived to avoid this "green-thumbed" artform as much as possible. Yet...

Over the past few years, weeding has become a mindless, perpetual yet neccessary endeavor to maintain any semblance of being "house-proud" (not to mention maintaining property value ). Sprouting up between the pavers and stepping stones in our substantial patio area are lichen-like fungi and an allmost "grass-like" growth. To add to this, my trusty gas powered "weed-whacker" of twenty years finally gave up the ghost about four months ago.

Needless to say, I've been reduced to yanking them out by hand, then coating the area with a vinegar solution. Sadly, this works only for a temporary period, as the "you can set your watch by it" daily rainfall of the region washes the deterent away, and the nuisances soon return.

Minus the funds for yet another weed-whacker, I've considered some of the "miracle in a bottle" weed killing products on the market, such as "Round-Up". Has anyone here with a like problem tried any of these products and could thusly recommend some? Are they cost effective, or effective at all, for that matter?

Trust me: My aching back, creaking knees, scratched wrists and bloody fingers eagerly await any advice in this matter!

    Thanks in advance,
    farmercraig, formally known as "chef"

Round-up kicks ass as advertised. Gasoline is woderful on those that can resist Round-up. Just a little dab will do it.

At 4 Dollars + per gallon, it's hardly cost effective...then again is it, compared to Round Up?

I've not checked the price of round-up recently but I'd just about bet gasoline is cheaper by the gallon.

Anyhow; remember, just a little splash. A gallon of gasoline carefully applied can probably brown up a good acre of grass.

Round-Up works really well. It kills everything. I use Weed-Begone when I just want to kill weeds.

There was some product I used last year that eliminated weeds for 2-3 months. It was advertised as such and it worked. I can't remember what it was. Whatever it was, I didn't see it at the local hardware store this year.

Round up is good, but the stuff they sell in the garden centers is so diluted its not funny. The ag grade stuff really kicks ass, but you have to be a farmer to get it. The best advice is to mix some Round Up w/another weed killer of some kind-the best I know of is 2-4-D, but that's an ag one and I don't believe they sell it to the average joe.

Craig, find a bag of weed and feed that will be large enough to treat your lawn. At first you may loose large patches of vegetation but once the grass starts filling in it will choke out the weeds. Wait a little while and hit it with Miracle grow. Get the sprayer unit and hit it every two weeks. I also have a tricycler blade on my mower to cut the grass. It's free nitrogen. Then treat it again in the fall. Good Luck.

Craig, just cut it all with the mower and let it do what it will. Screw it. The Jones' couldn't care less anyway, brother. Cut and go, you've only got so many ticks on the ol' clock.

Pour used oil in between the cracks in your paving stones. It kills like gasoline, yet last for years. I accidentally spilled some in a spot in my backyard and NOTHING has grown there in 4 years.

Don't use anything that is "ready to use"..it is diluted too much. Use a concetrate and use double what the label says. Also use weed killers that are systemic which means it kills the root.

If you have flowers or plants, use Preen before the weeds come up. But make sure your flowers are growing before using Preen. Preen kills any type of seed before it grows including the weed seeds that are usually 3-7 inches in the ground. In other words, do not use preen in a vegetable garden just after planting it...wait till all plants are growing!
