Roadtrip 14th of june to 17th of july.
Since this forum is almost filled with movie-talk, lets add one for the sake of variation. As some of you might have seen on this site, I've talked about this roadtrip before.
The reason I do this is because you guys are from the states, and you'll probably know the best way to travel around. So here's our catch at the moment.
We will travel with plane from Europe to San Fransisco, then we'll heading straight to Sacramento (we got friends there). From Sacramento we're heading towards Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and back to San Fransisco, thats kinda seattled.
Here's my questions to you guys (which knows California). From San Fransisco we'll going travel with car, which Route or (Highway?) should we take to Los Angeles to get best "visual experience" and we want to drive through Malibu and we'd love to go by the coast.
So is it Route 1 or is it 101 or any other? I don't get the difference, which one do you recommend us to take to L.A?
Thank you so much for your help!

Hey Lodewijk5150, that sounds like a pretty cool road trip. By the sound of it, you guys want to experience driving on the coast. Therefore, you should be taking ROUTE 1 from San Fran to LA. However, keep in mind that ROUTE 1 is not a highway, so expect that it will take you more time to get to LA.
The other option is to take HIGHWAY 101 from San Fran. This option will bring you to Santa Barbara faster. At around Santa Barbara, HIGHWAY 101 becomes a scenic highway and you will be able to drive through Malibu and so on.
Have fun dudes.

Thank you!
Very helpful information!
Which one (101/Route 1) would you recommend? Do we miss much if we're going direct to Santa Barbara with Highway 101 instead of Route 1 the whole way?
We got about 35 days total! We are planning to stay about 2-2˝ weeks in California + Las Vegas. The rest of the time is from Houston then roadtripping along the coast whole the way though miami then to NYC, is it too far? Or what do you think with the time we got?
Is it too long or what do you think? THank you for helpful information/tips!!

I would recommend HIGHWAY 101. I just did a road trip about 2 months ago from Vancouver BC to Miami Florida and it took 7 days of non stop driving(without stopping to see any attractions).
Here's some more info:
-Spend no more than 3 days in Vegas ( expensive hotels) Go to the Grand Canyon, it's worth the experience. If you bring camping gear, you can camp at the Grand Canyon for about 20$ a night.
-Give yourselves a good 7 days to get from Vegas to Miami(if not more)
-Your drive from Miami to New York will take you close to 36hrs and that is if you do it non stop.
Are you guys flying back from new York or do you have to get back to San Fran?
My advice to you is to take your time, as the United States have a lot of great things to see. But keep in mind, it is a very big country so plan carefully.

Say what? Maybe if you're doing US-1, but if you're going I-95 not so much. I can get from here (Orlando) to Binghamton, (upstate) New York in about 18.5 hours (with shared driving), so Miami to New York City shouldn't be much more than that - straight shot up I-95 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
