1st time U heard VH?
OK,
I bet this has been asked before, I don't care im asking again. When and where was the 1st time you heard VH? Were you instantly hooked, or did it take a while to grow on you?
Ok,
My first time was around 1983! I went to my new neighbor's house, he was the same age as I, and his name was Major Pewonofikit. Major if you or someone you know sees this cheers Anyway, I was NOT instantly hooked because his stereo was a POS with some cheap car speakers hooked up and it was loud and distorted, really sounded like shit! he was listening to Woman and Children First. I asked Major who is that your listening to? Major looked at me like where in the Fuck have you been, and said Van Halen Man! From that moment my life changed forever! We jammed until we went to college on a better, much better stereo!
Now I am learning there are a bunch of you out there that like to point out that these damn senarios have already been discussed a million times! I understand that! But, if you didn't discuss this in the past and you never have seen this thread, feel froggy to jump in and let us all know.
I am looking forward to reading some stories!
Later,
Saywin

well in grade schol, jump was popular but I was too into huey lewis, lol. I'm seeing them in A.C. this sat. by he way.
But it was 1986 and I heard dreams. WOW..
So i researched more vh from the past and I was hooked.
5150 had a lot of keyboard songs and i was already prone to 'jump' but then I heard ed's guitar on the others and, well i'm here now to say I still love this band.
The solo on 'cabo also took me for a ride and i'm still buzzin' from it,lol.
Hell of a band this van halen.I DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' CLICK!

The first time I heard VH, I was 5 yrs. old. My parents had got VHI and I heard Jamie's Crying. I've been hooked since that day. Out of all the music in the entire world there is absolutely no comparison whatsoever.

Sadly enough my first memory was being a kid watching the power rangers movie. Later in my teens it was in Detriot Rock City. So it was Dreams followed by Runnin' With The Devil. I soon realized I knew other songs like Panama, Jump and Dance The Night Away from the radio. After I bought 1984, I was hooked. When I got 5150, I never looked back.

It was around 78 or 79 and I had moved to a new town a year or 2 previously. Me and all my buds from the old neighbourhood were all hard core KISS fans before I moved away. I returned for a visit and one of my friends had the classic VH logo drawn on the back of his jean jacket. I was wondering what it stood for...so I asked. He took out the first album, placed the needle at the start of Runnin with the Devil and within seconds my mind was blown like never before...This was better than KISS! To say that back then was sacrilege but it was the truth...Eddie's ripping guitar playing and unique guitar sound...Dave's raspy, deep voice "I live my life like there's no tomorrow..." and that was it. My life had changed forever!

In 1984 when I got MTV and I saw the video for "Jump". I probally heard them before that on the radio. But when I heard "Jump" it changed my life.

Can't remember when I first heard them. I was too young. I knew all the stuff that was played on the radio. The first time I bought an album of theirs was in 1985. It was Diver Down . I loved Eddie's tone on that album. I immediately got the rest of their catalogue and bought my first guitar (an Ibanez Roadstar II).

I beleive it was 1996. I was 10 years old and my dad had just bought the Twister sound track. First track I heard was "Humans Being".
My dad would play me that song everyday on the way to football practice. I was and have been hooked ever sense.

I guess it was when "Pretty Woman" was on the radio. '82?
I remember when I first saw the video for "Jump", I thought Dave was Ed and Ed was Dave. My friends got a kick out of that. I was 13. Damn.

Believe it or not, I actually do remember the first time, which is pretty frightening.
It was some time in '78 and I was 10 years old. I was lying in bed with the radio on and Ain't Talking Bout Love came on. My older brother was in the room and I swear I remember saying something to the effect of, "who is this? Is that a guitar?" I was asking if that was a guitar because I'd never heard that kind of sound (tone) before. Of course, I didn't know a damn thing about guitar tone at the time, but I knew there was something different about their sound. It really was Eddie's sound and playing that pulled me in.
At the time, my brother was an obsessed Doors and Zeppelin fan and that's pretty much all we listened to. But not long after that I became as big a VH fan as anyone here. My obsession reached its peak in '83 and I was a certifiable VH lunatic from '84-'86..
.
.
VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

It's just Sammy improvising. It's not from an existing song/cover piece. Might actually have been a lyric chunk Sam had ready to go. Sounds like he was not expecting the riff that Ed launched into...
