Peavey HP Special EX

Peavey finally put up the EXP version of the HP Special on their website. I've been looking into this guitar ever since it was supposed to be unveiled last summer. Take a look: http://peavey.com/products/browse.cf...Special+EX.cfm
I just hope that the overall quality is better than the Wolfgang EXP.

One of the big things touted about the HP Special was the change in pickups to accomodate the coil taps. The EX doesn't have coil taps (which is why I believe they added the middle single coil).

The import version looks to be a little limited thus far in finishes--flat top solid basswood in trans sunburst or solid black.

It looks cool. I've also been waiting for this guitar. With the Wolfgang EXP, the neck and pickup specifications were the same. Can we expect the same with the HP EX?

Looks like the forward part of the body is a Strat and the back half is a Wolfgang. Not bad. I hope Peavey does very well with this. I was never a big fan of their stuff until the Wolfgang. I was surprised that Ed built a guitar with them, then I played one (Wolf - love 'em now).

Maybe it's the way the colors are translating on the computer screen, but the sunburst look really cheap, no?

Agreed, on the other models there are some great flame tops.

The HP Special EX is just solid basswood, so the trans sunburst won't be nearly as fancy as a flame top. I think they wanted to do a very affordable version of the HP, hence the lack of feature electronics, trem block, and fancy finishes. The guitar will probably go new for around $400.

I think most folks were expecting something similar to the Wolfgang Special EXP--a guitar that was mostly true to the original USA version. The HP Special EX seems to be more of a watered down version of the original; the out-of-phase middle single coil is likely the compromise to the more complicated wiring of individual pickup coil taps (too many potential QC issues).
