MADD volunteer charged in DUI

-NORTH BRANFORD, Conn — A volunteer for Mothers Against Drunk Driving who last month appeared at the state Capitol calling for stricter drunken-driving laws was one of five people cited for drunken driving this weekend, police said.

Amy D’Aniello, 31, of 229 Branford Road, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and speeding early Sunday after she was pulled over for allegedly driving 75 mph in a 45 mph zone on Route 80, police said.

The incident took place at 2:24 a.m., when an officer was conducting routine radar traffic surveillance.

D’Aniello last month took part in a MADD-sponsored presentation at the Capitol in which she and other volunteers drank beer, wine or vodka until they tested above the state limit of 0.08. D’Aniello drank wine in the April demonstration, which was used by MADD to ask the General Assembly to toughen drunken driving laws.
Police said the officer noticed an odor of alcohol on her breath Sunday night and that she tested above the legal limit.

"I’m profoundly disappointed," said Janice Heggie Margolis, executive director of MADD’s Connecticut Chapter.

"I hope she accepts the consequences and is held accountable. I’m disappointed that a volunteer who should know about designating a sober driver, should know about standard practices, chose to drink and then drive. ... A 5,000-pound vehicle in the hands of a drunk driver is a weapon. We’re grateful that neither she nor anyone else was hurt," Margolis said.

I have received two alcohol related driving infractions and other than money out of my pocket and a few inconveniences, the laws aren't as tough as they could be...
