    Default MXR Gear

so now that's it's been out awhile what does everyone think of the EVH MXR stuff he's had out for over a year now? For me.. I love the stuff I had an MXR Phase 90 in my playing days and loved using it and wish I would've had the EVH one now.. the you gotta admit the MXR flanger has always had an edge to it the others dont have.. just wish we'd get a good MXR delay out now,, just to keep the continuity of the MXR stuff on my pedal board you know?

Back in the day my pedalboard was almost all Boss stuff. Now there's only two Boss things left in it: a DD-6 delay and TU-2 tuner. MXR occupies the phaser (EVH), flanger (M-117R), chorus (M-134), and line boost (M-133 Micro Amp) spots now, and the biggest reason why is because it all RULES.

I like the EVH Phase 90 for the 'Script' mod option (better for humbuckers), but I don't have the EVH flanger, nor do I plan to get it. I don't quite see the point of the price difference for a paint job and button that automatically reverts to the "Unchained" setting. (Like I can't just turn the buttons to that setting myself?) I guess it'd be cool to do an instant switch to a different setting, but again that's not really worth the price to me.

I went over to Sam Ash about 2 weeks ago to pick up a regular MXR Flanger. They didn't have any in stock, and I didn't wanna leave with nothing, so for $20 more, I scored the EVH version. It'd be nice if the EVH settings were another footswitch instead of the little button, the button's a little hard to switch with shoes on and all...

Now I want the EVH phaser not only because it's better than my normal phaser, but I want it to match my EVH flanger!

I just got my EVH Flanger a little while ago. I've been playing it through my 36 Watt RP amp and loving every minute of it, but last week I was having jam with our Singer/Bass Player and I couldn't be bothered dragging my amp over because he has a beautiful late 70's 100 Watt Marshall JMP going through an Avatar 4x12 I've been dying to try since we started playing together. Anyway, I take my pedalboard over, because I love my EVH Flanger. I plug everything in, adjust the amp to where I want it (Preamp up all the way, because it's a surprisingly low gain amp) and I can hear the Flanger's sweep ever so slightly when it's OFF. I had the same issue with my EVH Phase 90 going through my Marshall SL-X when I had it. I thought the problem would be solved by now, because I complained to MXR back then about the crappy bypass on the Phase 90, but damn if it isn't still an issue. I have no intention of selling it, but I may get a TB Loop Box to put it in. The bypass is unacceptable. Especially for the price.

I've got the MXR Phase 90, the orange one, and I did the R28 mod to it-the script logo mod-and it sounds fantastic. Great little unit. One knob and that's it. One problem I've always had with stomps is that it takes me forever to tweak and turn knobs to get something I'm happy with, then I have to remember the settings. If I write them down I always lose the paper. Then to switch settings in the middle of a song just can't be done. I keep my Phase 90 set to a little more than minimum and it sounds great whenever I kick it in. I ain't too bright with this stuff, and one knob makes it easy for me. When I get the EVH flanger, I'll probably just keep the Unchained setting on all the time and use that and then maybe one other subtle setting and just switch back and forth between the two settings. Simple is good.

I love this MXR gear much easier to get this stuff now then in 88! I also like you guys had reservations on getting this stuff, especially the flanger cause freaking almost 200 bucks for it and almost half that for a regular flanger... but I had a couple of flangers in the 80's and no matter what settings and trial and error I just couldnt find Ed's setting... and I tell ya,, even after having the EVH button there,, it sounds different to me then the record and I'm going no wonder why I could never nail it... I wouldnt have guessed the EVH setting would have been the one Ed used.. But I bought it and love it and use the unchained setting constantly.. for an EVH fan it was a good investment.. no regrets.

I have the EVH Phase 90 (I had a Block logo one I did the R28 mod too as well), and I have an old MXR Flanger. Love 'em, two best stomp boxes I own by far.

I'm also someone who likes to keep it very simple, I don't have the patience nor the desire anymore to sit and dial in knobs for hours.

How do you like that H&K 20th Anniversay Edition Tube combo? I have the Switchblade head and it's unreal! I'm surprised that more people don't use H&K amps?

I've played several switchblades, and I actually like my 20th Anniversary more than the switchblade! I wasn't expecting that at all....I was expecting the SB to be a monster compared to my 20th seeing as the SB has el34's and all those built in effects.

there's just something about the 20th that seems more.....alive to me.
