What Apple notebook to buy?
Though I've used Apple desktop computers for years, I'm looking to buy my first Apple notebook and want some suggestions.
From what I can tell, the iBook G4 is the most popular Mac notebook, correct? Any owners wish to offer their opinions? I'm a writer, so it'll mostly be used for word processing on-the-go. I'm not much of a computer gamer, so those associated features aren't important.
Thanks for any words of advice.

Hey Scotty, I've had a 15' Powerbook for a few years now and I've had zero complaints with it. The wife has had an ibook for over a year now and has had zero issues as well. If you've used Apple already then you know all there is to know otherwise.

Size Matters
Love my 17". Some will say the extra inches are neglible, but tell that to
your doctor. Seriously. If you're planning on working with timelines of any
kind (Pro Tools, AE, Flash, etc., etc.) the extra real estate does come in handy.
It sounds like you might not require a lot of screen space but something
to consider if you work with multiple surfaces and progams.Last edited by mistere; 05.05.07 at 01:35 PM.

I wouldn't suggest an iBook or PowerBook of any flavor. Those are old systems and they are on the verge of becoming very dated. If your looking for something cheap (relatively), go with the MacBook which is 13' and starts at around $1100. It is a very good system for most users' needs and is a great bang for your buck. If you were looking to do any sort of gaming or power-user type stuff then I'd say the MacBook Pro, but judging from your initial post, the regular MacBook will be perfect for you.

For your purposes, you'll find little advantage in going with a MacBook Pro as opposed to a MacBook, just from a hardware perspective. The keyboard feel, however, is very different between the two product lines. If you're a halfway decent typist, try them both before you buy.

I know this is a year-and-a-half late, but I finally kicked my PC to the curb and picked up a MacBook. DAMN I love Apple. I shouldn't have waited this long.

Hey Scotty, have you seen the new Macbook Air yet? The thing is less than an inch thick and weighs only three pounds.

Yeah, I looked at one in the Apple store when I picked up the MacBook. Pretty sweet.

If I was still traveling a lot for work, I'd be all over that MacBook Air.
I did order a new MacPro a couple of weeks ago. I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival. I have no idea what I'll do with eight processing cores, but I'm sure I'll find something.

You lucky bastard Mike. I keep telling myself that one day I'll get a mac pro. I've been known to just build my own personalized one online at the apple store from time to time.

I had to work a little to justify it to myself, but I worked out a pretty good deal. I sold my G5 last summer for $1,500 (and somehow I don't feel bad about that), bought another just like it for $260, and have been patiently waiting for the new models since. I'm able to qualify as a "student developer" so I got a huge price break. This is the last year I'll ever be able to get that particular discount, so I figured I might as well do it.
Besides, once I join the ranks of penniless lawyers later this year I may not be able to afford something like this.

Pretty much stock. Two 4-core 2.8ghz Xeons, 2GB of memory, 320GB hard drive, an 8800GT video card, wireless networking, and wireless keyboard/mouse. The 8800GT has delayed things until the second week of February.
I scrounged up a second video card, so I'll be able to run three monitors. A 23", 22", and 20". I've got two 750GB drives and two 500GB drives, and they'll all fit inside for a total of 2.8 terabytes of storage. I've got another 4GB of memory on the way. I'll probably end up sticking in a card for more FW ports.
It's a little excessive.

So have you seen the new Time Capsule yet? I can't wait for it to come out. This is the exact thing I have been looking for to back up all of my stuff. Also, what are your thoughts on Apple offering movie rentals via itunes and also the revamped apple tv?

Time Capsule is being offered at a really good price. For the cost of a single-drive 1TB NAS you're also getting a 802.11n router. I do my backups just by cloning drives, but if Time Machine was my method I'd take a good look at Time Capsule. Too many people are collecting so many irreplaceable digital memories and not taking the simple steps needed to keep them safe.
I don't know what to think about the movie rentals and AppleTV. I've had an AppleTV since last summer, and for what it is alright. It has a gorgeous interface and an awesome screen saver (seriously!), but could use a lot of polish. I don't buy any videos from Apple's store, because I never know how I'm going to want to watch them (and the quality just isn't good enough). If I could only have one media client right now, I'd pick an Xbox 360. It plays videos just as well as an AppleTV, is just as easy to use for music (just not the DRM'd stuff), and completely kick's AppleTV's ass when it comes to displaying photos.
Watch what'll happen with the iPod Touch and iPhone in the next couple of months. The software development kit will be released soon, and I think we'll see some really amazing mobile software being developed. This is going to be the culmination of John Sculley's Knowledge Navigator concept from a decade and a half ago. People have been trying to get it "right" since then, and Apple is about to actually do it. That's very, very ironic.
Sculley kicked Jobs out of Apple. Sculley's problem was that he never had enough of the "vision thing." The one brilliant goal he had was just way too ambitious for the time. Now Jobs has been back at Apple for a decade, and is about to get credit for Sculley's baby. One of the first things Jobs did when he went back to Apple ten years ago was to kill off the last vestiges of Sculley's Newton project. A decade later, and Jobs is about to fulfill the promise of Newton. The guy is a magician.

My take the reason Pyro John Watkins is bringing it up now is after reading Alex’s book he took issue with the way Gregg Emerson was described as being unprofessional. I’m guessing he wanted to...
