Default Name the songs eddie played bass on!

Ok there's the obvious 3 new ones but what about songs in the past that you have a pretty good idea eddie played bass on, because... well... the bass playing kicked ass!

I have a lot more close listening to do but I'm going to start it this off with "Push Comes to Shove" and "One I Want". The fills on both are killer.

I don't think Ed played bass on any of Fair Warning. Just because PCTS has a killer bass line doesn't mean that Mikey couldn't have played it.

yeah that is true, it just seemed more likely that Ed would have at least come up with that kind of bass line, if not played it. Also I base that assumption not just on the bass line itself, but how it is played. The nuances, the fills seem a lot more Eddie-esque. I don't think its improbable he played on a few other tracks, and I'm examining "Dirty Movies" at the moment for similar reasons as PCTS, the bass harmonics first alerted me to it. But having said that, Fair Warning has a killer bass sound all together (not just the playing of one or two tracks).

Chop, I always thought Ed was just playing the "guitar-bass" hybrid, not the bass itself. I listened to a bit just then though, and there is a really cool bas run about 30 seconds in that would suggest otherwise.

Mike played all the bass on the entire catalogue except for some (not all, some) songs on III and the three BOBW tracks.

Every other track, ever? Mike. Sure, Eddie may have told him how to play many of them, just as he suggests to Al what to snap and Dave what to growl and Sam what to howl. Sometimes he's more insistent than other times.

There was an interview with Mike Plotnikoff, the Second Engineer on the Balance album, from the Inside a few years back. He talked about how Eddie basically made a lot of suggestions to Mike for his parts. But it WAS Mike playing on the entire album.

Fair Warning is Mike top to bottom. Eddie has NEVER had bass tone that awesome. (Exhibits A, B, and C: Sammy's "I Never Said Goodbye," VH III, and the three BOBW tracks.)

I'm not basing the assumption on the killer bass tone, but rather the playing. Listen closely to the playing on "One I Want". The bass playing has an extremely Ed feel in all the fills especially. I get that same feeling for PCTS... does anyone have a live version of PCTS? maybe then we can compare the two?

That 'extremely Ed feel' is simply Mike adding his essential component to that classic Van Halen groove. Yes, Mike can play the fuck outta the bass. Imagine that.

Van Halen has never played PCTS live, despite repeated rumors to the contrary.

LOL! Why is some people so desperately need to believe Ed played the bass on earlier albums? When I was young, there was never any need or question as to whether he played those kewl bass licks in the classic catalogue. Nowadays everything's a conspiracy.
