    America's System of Education

Was that the test that taught me that a baloo is a bear and a yonker is a young man? I can't tell you how valuable that has been over the years.

I thought about running for President.

Not because I want to actually win, it's just that you get to keep left over campain money and spend it any way you want to.

I wonder how hard it would be to raise five or six million bucks, spend $250,000 and then withdraw and retire.

If Mike Gravel was about 20 years younger, he'd be a great President.

Of course he doesn't have a chance in Hell of winning the nomination. But hopefully he stays in it long enough for Obama or Edwards or whomever (Gore, if he steps in) to take some of his issues seriously, the way that Kerry had to finally agree with a lot of what Howard Dean said. If he had agreed with ALL of what Dean said, he probably would have had enough votes from other states to offset the Ohio theft.

It was just a dumb joke, killer. Settle down. These are not the men of peace, love, nor
    understanding.

But since you mentioned it, I do understand education should be a priority.
Seems like a given but... it isn't. 'Cause I also understand that prioritizing
education is just something people like to say.

You need to put up a smiley face, I was in attack mode all night. Sorry.

I'd love to see education, the way we educate our children and ourselves, brought into the 21st Century. The biggest problem is at the state and local level, because there is so much mandated waste and there's often nothing that can be done from the outside in. I know we have educators on this board, they agree that some things just need to be changed but then they'll tell you about the phonebook-sized binder (or binders) of state and county regulatons that tell the school how each dollar is to be spent. If you can get rid of those binders of regulations you might just get the kind of progress everyone wants to see.

Take Oakland, California. They spend an average of $9,460 per student, so in a classroom with 25 students that's $ 236,500 sitting in that one classroom. In the case of over-crowding, say 35 students, then you've got $331,100. In a perfect world, a teacher could take that money and then, under the guidence of the Principal, spend it in a way that the students get the greatest benifit. Right now, the state ,County and City tells them how to spend that money.

Then compare this with the Private School that Sammy Hagar sent all of his kids to: Robert Louis Stevenson Shool. Now, he boarded his kids there so today that would cost $40,200, but the local rich-kids pay $24,400. In the Carmel Unified School District, where I went through school, the ADA is $14, 630 per student. That's $9,770 less than the premium private school. That's not much.

Meanwhile, Compton School District in Los Angeles has an ADA of $7,584 per student with a daily attendance of 28,239. Their budget is $216,961,833.oo
Carmel Unified has a daily attendance of 2,034 and a budget of $29,756,726.oo. For Compton Unified to spend an equal amount per student as Carmel Unified, their budget would have to be $413,136,570.oo, an increase of $196,219,737.oo. The City of Los Angeles is projecting revenue of 4.2 billion and the Los Anglese school district has over 80 schools. That would be an increase of $1600000000.oo

    Ouch.

I don't know if money alone would even make a difference. And this is just comparing two school districts in one state. I have a headache just looking through the California Department of Education's website looking this stuff up.

It would almost be easier to close every school for one year and start over from he ground up.
