The humbucker
Say, isn't this year the golden anniversary of Seth Lover's genius? Wasn't it first put in a '57 Les Paul and some other '57 Gibson?

Might have. I'm just going off the top of my noggin really. But it just struck me today that it was 1957 that (I think) they came out.

Yep, the Leesona winder that was used to make those pickups at the old Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, MI was purchased by Seymour Duncan. He uses that machine to make his Seth Lover pickups, which by the way, is a closer match to a Van Halen tone (with it's A2 magnet) than a '59, but I'm sure some will disagree.

It's called the Peavey High-Output Sludge-o-matic.
No, seriously, it's just referred to as a "Wolfgang p'up", and you can find buy them used. 14k DC resistance, Alnico 5 magnet
For all intents & purposes, it's a "reliced" Seymour Duncan '78 pickup. Roughly 9.5k DC resistance, Alnico 2 magnet. You can buy the '78 from Duncan's Custom Shop, but it'll cost ya.
You can pretty much get a similar effect by going with a Duncan 59/Custom hybrid with an Alnico 2 magnet, but it won't cost you $150. Roughly 11.5k DC resistance, Alnico 2 magnet. BachToRock (over at the Duncan forums) makes them and sells them. He's a bit of a local hero over there. Eddie is actually the one who spoke to him and gave him the idea for it back during the Fair Warning tour. It has one coil from a Duncan Custom, and one coil from a '59. It uses an Alnico 2 magnet to warm-up the highs. So you get the punch of the Custom line of pickups, combined with the chord-clarity and transparency of a PAF.

how much can you get a Duncan 59/Custom hybrid for would you say??
I am intersted in a new bridge pickup that would work great for a:
Let Paul Classic
Mahogany Body
Rosewood Fingerboard
I guess the sound I'd like to hit is Van Halen 1978 tone or something with nice mids, clear highs, and no mud. Any suggestsions???

Hmm...a fat Gibson mahogany body with a Rosewood fingerboard typically = "dark".
You'd probably be fine with DiMarzio's Virtual Hot PAF. 9.3k DC resistance, Alnico 5 magnet, but uses the "Air" trickery to warm-up the highs like an Alnico 2 magnet would. Plus, it only costs the standard price.
I would imagine if you PM'd BackToRock over at the Duncan forums, he'd be happy to hook you up with a Hybrid for a normal price. It doesn't really cost anything extra. He buys one '59 and one Custom, splits them up, uses the requested magnet, and then sells 2 pickups. If anything he should charge for labor, but I'm not sure that he does. I believe he whips them up in batches at a time. You'd have to ask.
