I play bass and am a huge MA fan--very underrated as a bassist and as a component of the VH sound IMO.

There's a couple of reasons people talk as though he's not part of the band etc. According to Sam's book (yeah I know it was never published), ever since Ray Daniels entered the picture, Mike's been a salaried member. In Crazy From the Heat, DLR says that EVH was going to replace MA. Various rumors have circulated dating back to the Fair Warning tour about Mike being replaced by Jeff Berlin or Billy Sheehan. EVH has played with both of them on some projects or NAMM show type things. In addition, anytime they've done the collective group interview, I've always gotten the sense that they imposed some kind of gag order on MA. IMO the worst thing was when Sam left the band because then EVH became the band's main spokesperson and it was a little bit awkward at times for me to listen to. DLR and Sam were fun when they were the spokesmen.

Mike rocks big time!--they'd be crazy to cut him loose.
