It has been too quiet in here lately. And given the current state of VH, I don't see it getting any better.

Nevertheless, nothing brings this place alive as quickly as the age-old Dave vs. Sammy debate. Sammy fans are quick to point out that Dave recent album sales have receded faster than his hairline while Dave fans point out that Sammy's growing waistline bears a direct inverse relationship to his sales.

For our resident statisticians, I wonder about the following sales data:
(1) Best selling single solo album -- Dave or Sammy (I would guess that EEAS outsold VOA, but I could be wrong)
(2) Platinum and gold solo -- who has more
(3) Sales since leaving VH -- Sammy has done 3 albums since VH so compare EEAS, Skyscaper and ALAE to MTM, Red Voodoo, and Ten 13.
(4) Greatest Hits -- Unboxed vs. The Best

Anyone have these numbers, could make for lively debate while we wait for VH news.

1. EEAS - it's been certified Platinum, but Dave says it went double plat. in his book, and I've heard it from TV interviews, etc.

2. DLR has 3 Platinum and 1 Gold, sammy is similar,. but I think DLR has more Platinum.

3. Not even close - the 3 hagar albums combined would barely pass 1 million. The 3 Roths are 'officially' 2.5 million - but those figures haven't been updated since they were first certified, so I reckon you could at least double that figure.

4. sammy wins this one - he was still in VH when this disc came out, and thus recieved a nice bit of attention. Dave's release was a contractual obligation freeing him from W.B. and thus was never taken seriously as a product.
"So who died and made YOU David Lee Roth???"

Crazy From the Heat: Platinum....easy 1 million+

EEAS: Certified Platinum: maybe double Platinum, maybe 2 million+(or close give or take)

Skycraper: Platinum, easy 1 million+

A Little ain't Enough: certified Gold....has sold about 830,000+ copies in the US...source VHND(Grant is usually unbiased, at least I believe so).....http://www.vhnd.net/articles/010209-01.shtml

It should be noted that these figures are for the US only....anyone have any idea about International sales figures?????

maybe this should really be about just who the public "cares" more about since 1996.

Sammy has kept up his popularity for the most part while Dave has become an obscure joke to the general public. Not the ones that hang out at VH message boards though.
'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

Now this TOTALLY is not a fair question. Sammy left Van Halen 6 years ago - in that time he has released 3 CD's. Over the past 6 years - Dave has released (ex Greatest Hits) - one (ya I know the reasons why - but lets keep apples to apples).

As well - your looking at Dave is his hey day - Dave was god in the early 80's - there was just no denying that. And unfotunately for the current state of rock and roll - he has lost his some of his appeal.

I'm not Sammy or Dave bashing. Both guys kick serious ass in their respective strenghts. I just wish those other three yo-yo's that comprise Van Halen would realize this and make a decision.

Sammy has kept up his popularity? What planet are you on dude.

Dave is only a joke to the children (Sammy fans) who were not VH fans from the get.

Put aside all the stupid numbers.....isn't the question DLR vs. Sammy solo? DLR's bands kill the Sammy bands with so much skill and musicianship that it is not even a true question.
Sammy's bands have who?.....?
DLR= Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, Bissonette Bros, Jeff Becker, Sammy has a waborita as a "mascot" ....DON"T GET ME WRONG...but DLR rules the DLR vs. SAMMY question....any questions?
Just go for it!

Sammy and Dave have both had uneven solo careers. People here really want to see clear-cut differences between the two, but similarities are much more definite.

Both once sang for VH.

Both are currently obscure.

Both enjoyed solo success at some point.

Both did their best work with VH (that's not true for #3).

Both have less than friendly relations with VH.

They're like a couple of women who were once married to the same man. They've heard all the bad things about each other, but in the end are quite alike. The kids (us) take sides about who's best for dad, and wish that dad would come to his senses and get our favorite back.

The sales arguments are silly in this case. The music market has changed so much that the data is incomparable in any meaningful sense.

During Sammy's pre-VH solo years he had a better band than the Waboritas: former Montrose bass player Bill Church, Gary Pihl, and David Lauser.

Not to mention Denny Carmassi was also in Sammy's solo band for awhile making it 3\4 of Montrose. No matter how you want to put it. Diamond Dave is no more famous nowadays than Sammy. Dave is looked as a washed up hero of the 80's by many people as is portrayed that way especially on VH1 or MTV. If anyone still thinks Van Halen with Hagar or Roth is going to be huge again. You need to quit smokin son because the days of Van Halen being a major player in the Rock world are over. We might or might not ever get to see another go around with the band and it will be good music I am sure. But the glory days are over. And I am quite sure that is the reason Ed and Alex havent felt a more urgent need to get some music out there. They realize the ride is over and are maybe waiting for the 80's nostalgia to begin(which VH1 is trying like hell to happen)Then Van Halen will be no more than a nostalgia band, no matter who the singer is. Personally I would rather Dave and Sammy keep putting out new solo material and VH can just put out anything they choose. Since I enjoy Sammy,Dave and Van halen separatly as much as together. I was listening to Best of and it struck me how both Me Wise Magic and Humans Being were such great songs released in 96. And how far VH has fallen. Both Dave and Sammy are very talented. The fans should quit arguing over who was better. Who the hell cares. What you should be doing is enjoying new Hagar,Roth when they come out with new CD's soon. By the way 3 years I have been posting here and I could have written this same post 3 years ago I bet. Sad isn't it.
