Eddie's "chorusing" effect?
I was thinking, the thick chorus effect Eddie really started using heavily during 5150, OU812, and again on the Balance tour as part of his main tone doesn't really sound like a true chorus to me. There's no "sweeping" in the effect (high to low) whatsoever. It sounds more like some stereo doubling type of thing. I've always loved that sound, but I cannot come close to getting it with any chorus pedal through my 5150 combo, even by turning the rate/speed way down. Has anyone tried to duplicate this before?

I believe he is using an Eventide harmonizer to achieve this effect. By all accounts a really useful effect, but very difficult through a basic rig. They do have some pedals coming out soon, which is good because the H-3000 is still expensive, even used.

Achievements:
I have a digitech dhp-55 harmonizer, and it gets the best chorus I have ever owned. I would love an eventide, but the DHP was under $1000. Plus I had connections at the time and got mine for about $600 before they even hit the market. so so on harmonies, but great chorus.
I SURVIVED TEXAS LINKERS WEEKEND I, II, III, IV and VI and VII.barely made it to VIII time to slow down

to answer the threadstarters question:
its a "detune" or "harmonizing" type of effect, where the original frequency is doubled and one half is slightly detuned from the other half, creating a "stereo" like feel.

Will the Boss Super Shifter pedal do a decent job at this?

Peavey made some great products back a few years back that
got that pitch shift sound. They are:
Tubefex Preamp;
Transtubefex Preamp; and
Addverb III effects unit.
The two preamps have a patch called "browncake" which is that chorusy sound from the Sammy era. The trick is to have a stereo pitch shift and delay. The pitch should be detuned +9 cents on one side and -9 cents on the other.
A cheap alternative to the Eventide units previously discussed if you can find them. The tubefex/transfex are both preamp + effects and you can turn the preamp off.
Definitely a cool sound. I'd like to have been a fly on the wall when he was getting tone for "Respect the Wind."How open-minded do I have to be before my brains start spilling out?

it helps having two amplifiers also to actually have a true stereo chorus effect.

Yep, it's pitch shift. You can use pretty much any unit that does a decent pitch shift. Detune one side down a few cents, and if you're in stereo, shift the other side up a few.
It's best to take a line out of your amp and send that signal to the effect, and then to a separate power amp into a second cabinet to get the true effect.
Actually, the 'best way' would be to send the detuned signal to one cab and the shifted up signal to another (stereo).
Some cheap alternative units that do a great pitch shift like this are the Yamaha SPX 90, Lexicon MPX1 (which I happen to have for sale), and others.www.facebook.com/revery

Another thing that does a surprisingly good job is the POD Xt live thru headphones or both outputs. Set the Mod to a Stereo Square Flange with the speed at .10, predelay and depth at 100, feedback at 0, and mix around 75. This does a really good job for me.

An SPX90 is probably the best and cheapest route. Warren Demartini used them for that for many years.

Behringer has a Pitch Shifter pedal in the works. At the prices those pedals go for, might be worth looking into.

Even cheaper is a Boss Digital Dimension pedal. I see em on eBay for 125 a lot. That's what I used when I was into that tone. The other unit that works great is a TC Electronics G-Major. They're a bit more expensive but it does it to tee. I've got some old clips kicking around if you want to hear it in action, just email, or PM me.
