Default Top Ten Van Halen Songs

    10. Hot For Teacher
A song during the Diamond Dave era that displayed Eddie Van Halen's many guitar strengths. With backing from Roth, this made a truly great song. Real great to listen to while driving, and in game rooms.

    9. 5150
I heard this one on the album first, and turned it off. Then I bought Live: Without a Net. It was an amazing display of truly amazing Eddie Van Halen guitar play, and Sammy on vocals. Its one of those songs you listen to over and over, especially live.

    8. Right Now
Awesome keyboard play by Eddie Van Halen. And vocals from Sammy. Right Now tells people about how we should live for the moment, and treasure today. About forgetting yesterday and tomorrow, and focusing on Right Here, Right Now.

    7. Dreams
What an inspirational song. Its so awesome, one of Van Halen's finest songs. Eddie on keyboard, Sammy on guitar. It talks about something better. How things will get better, and about flying, without a care.

    6. Best of Both Worlds
I love this song. In the concerts, Eddie, Michael, and Sammy get in a line and do a sort of "dance" to this song. Its another awesome Red Rocker song, and talks about not settling for just anything.

    5. Panama
Now, this is a cool song. Its a song that people have no idea what it talks about. Some think its about a car, as the music video suggests. But Diamond Dave reveals that is is really about a stripper. Nonetheless, it is an awesome song! Both Sammy and Dave do this one well.

    4. Not Enough
I just love this one. Eddie doing a piano thing, and Sammy playing guitar on certain parts. It talks about unconditional love for someone you truly care about, and spend the rest of your life with. Its just a beautiful song...

    3. Eruption/You Really Got Me
Yeah, I put two up there. On the album you hear Eddie doing some amazing guitar work, and right after that you hear You Really Got Me, a cover of a song by the Kinks. This song kicked off the Kinks career, as it also did for Van Halen years later. Its good with Dave, and better with Sammy.

    2. Why Can't This Be Love
Why is this one number 2? Because its not really the 2 song, but its message helped me through a dark time. You see, I loved this girl with everything I had. I thought about her in the morning, breakfast, school, lunch, afternoon, dinner, and before I went to sleep. When she didn't show up for class, it hurt so bad inside. I finally told her how I felt, and she turned me down HARD. I was in a real dark place, crying in class and such. At the time I had only heard of Van Halen. One day, I heard Jump and knew I had to listen to them. I looked them up, and this one I came across first. I loved it. The lyrics made me feel worse at first, then it helped me. This is an awesome song.

    1. 1984/Jump
Another split song track. 1984 is a keyboard solo, for those who don't know. Its an awesome keyboard, truly amazing work by Eddie. Right after 1984 is Jump, also a keyboard song. Its just an awesome song, about forgetting your cares. About... jumping! Its one of those upbeat, uplifting songs that is a Van Halen classic. It also helps to hear Hagar replacing the "got my back against the record machine" with "got my ass against the record machine" making a funny song as well. This was the first ever song I heard from Van Halen, making it my #1 choice!
I love Rock 'n' Roll. Plain & simple, its awesome.

umm, don't want to rain on your parade, but seeing that your first post is to start a thread like this, let me explain that most people don't need a history lesson on VH tunes, and that "a best of" listing thread has been done to death on these boards - it's only interesting when you bring a new twist to it - e.g., top 5 dave-era songs that were ~~~, etc.

    that said... FREE POST!

"1984 is a keyboard solo, for those who don't know." ?????? Exactly how big would the rock have to be that I would have lived under for the past 20+ years to not know that? And then you follow it up with "Right after 1984 is Jump, also a keyboard song."

I'm not buying this post. It's gotta be a regular under an alias just busting balls.

I think the Bay City Rollers were underrated. Yea i know, for their day you could probably say they were a boy band. But at least they played instruments. Any thoughts?

Think i'll punt on the top ten list.

If this isn't bull-shit, then read on...
Just a few quick points, by no means meant to be offensive to our new friend.

-"For those who don't know" is a statement very rarely used in the Van Halen only forums because we all know. There are only the most insignificant of facts on here that not everyone knows about this band. We are without a doubt, the most informed and insightful Van Halen website on the planet. People on here know countless things that Van Halen members have either forgotten or never knew themselves.
-Your list is painfully commercial, almost as if a radio DJ selected them based on chart position, minus a couple selections. I think that once you have had a chance to explore the entire VH catalogue your choices will change dramatically.

I should also mention that not everyone likes both Sammy and Dave....
