Ok, as many of you can tell by my icon, i am pro dlr - vh era. bu recently i have been listening to songs like "finish what u started", and i really like "Poundcake". and i started thinking. despite him not being my favorite, alot of credit is due to hagar. for starters, hagar didnt copy dlr too much. when i heard "inside" i thought he was a copycat. but he eventually moved vh in a different direction. second, hagar led vh through the whole grundge period. i honestly dont know if roth could have done that, since he didnt survive it with his solo career. thats not a crack on roth, its just an observation.another thing about hagar that pissed me off was when eddie and alex said "his work ethic sucked. since then vh put out 1 album (hopefully another one soon) . since then hagar has released two and is on his third. i will let facts speak for that one. now, if u were to compare hagar to roth, i dont even think. its roth. and i will be writing a defense for roth soon, but i was in the mood. just some thoughts.

Well said, Edeble Ed... I'm more of a Sammy era fan.. but like I've said all along.. you shouldn't really compare/argue which era is better.. they each have their own qualities that some like, others don't.

I don't understand bashing eachother over our likes/dislikes.. Dave and Sammy are two very different singers.. both did an EXCELLENT job in their own right. Oh, and so did that Gary guy..

I am a huge roth fan, but I agree and I think most true fans of good rock would agree.

Sammy did a great job and they made some great music. Problem for me is that without Roth it is NOT van halen. I know a million people will now reply that anything Ed plays on is Van Halen. But I have always and will always consider VH the band and VH the person, two seperate things.

I have to agree with Mikey Metalhead on this one. They did put out some kick-ass tunes with Sammy, but it just wasn't what I consider to be Van Halen. I give alot of credit to Sammy for even having the balls to hook up with this group. If 5150 would have failed, it would have been the end of Sammys career IMO.

EXCELLENT point about EVH's work-ethic crack, edeble ed.

i only wish i could see the look on ed's face when he sees/hears that comment these days. all sammy wanted to do was take some time off after a long tour and as his wife was about to give birth to his kid (wanna bet ed would've done the same thing if val was pregnant?)

now, i'm as big a fan of eddie and his music as anyone, but that crack was totally uncalled for ... and dare i say he looks like a true idiot now for saying it.

I still find it humurous that there are those that can honestly say that Van Halen with Sammy Hagar is not Van Halen. I think Ed and Al might disagree with that to some degree. It's not like Sam whacked them over the head in 1985 and said, "I'm stealing your band, boys!" They (particularly Ed) played a part in every piece of music that came out during that period and are as much responsible for how it sounded as Sammy was. But to attribute the name "Van Halen" only to the music with Roth is kinda silly. Van Halen was not and is not his band. It's Ed and Al's band. Quite simply, Ed and Al are Van Halen and they've asked a few singers to front their band. We all have our preferences with regard to those singers but each incarnation was Van Halen while it existed.

I agree Sean, and this is where the DLR-only boys and me disagree. I still say that VH without Ed is the only time you can say, "It's not Van Halen." You have had 3/4 of the band there for 25 years, don't tell me it's not all VH.

Brett, it's not all VH. By your definition of VH, we've had 100% of VH all along.(Eddie) Are you saying we can put David Coverdale on vocals, Flea on bass, and Ray Luzier on drums and we've got Van Halen? Sorry, I disagree. IMO Van Halen is ED,AL,MIKE, and DAVE.

No that's not what I said at all! I said if Eddie left VH, then you can't call it "Van Halen." I said nothing about him playing with other musicians. I never said nor inferred AT ALL that a band made up of David Coverdale, Eddie, Ray Luzier, and Flea could be called "Van Halen." Now that's just being ridiculous.

You are right Brett! If Eddie left you couldn't fucking call it VH. If Mike and Al left you could still call it VH. Eddie is NOT fucking replaceable, where as the other 2 are very replaceable, average, dime a dozen musicians. Eddie is very special. In concert it is so obvious. Eddie is amazing and just outplays his 2 fucking sidekicks.Peace out bro.

Sorry madden, I feel I need to say this. Alex Van Halen is not a "dime a dozen" musician by any means. Grab a pair of sticks and find a drumkit and have at it. Try to play to some of Van Halen's music and duplicate what Alex does. Try "Hot For Teacher", Mine All Mine", "CGTSNM", and maybe "Unchained". Then come here and tell me that he's a "dime a dozen" musician. Now, I don't know, but you might be one of these "dime a dozen" musicians you speak of. But if you aren't a musician, I don't see how you can make an un-educated statement like that. Even the drummers in all of Dave's solo bands haven't come close to duplicating what Big Al has done. It's also one thing to duplicate something, but it's another to create from scratch, and write what he does. I'm not trying to flame you by any means, and I hope you don't see it that way. Just want to know how you can make a statement like that without anything to back it up with.
I think what Brett was saying was that if Eddie left Al, and Mikey, you don't have Van Halen. Mike and Al couldn't, and would never replace Eddie and think they could still call it Van Halen. I better stop now.

Top Timmy, I guess I might have exaggerated a little bit. It's just that Eddie is so fucking good he outshadows the others. If Mike and Al were in other bands they might be the stars. But in VH they are just average because of Eddie. Eddie is too fucking good for HIS own good. That is the whole fucking problem.Peace out Mike and Al.
