Default Girl, 16, kicked off plane for coughing

A 16-year-old girl who caught a cold during a school trip to New York was kicked off her flight home because she was coughing.

HONOLULU - An airline pilot on Tuesday ordered a 16-year-old Kalani High School student pulled off an East Coast flight after a coughing fit. Rachel Collier was on a spring break trip with her school.

The girl's classmates returned home to Honolulu on Tuesday night, but Collier remained on the East Coast.

"I was behind her she started coughing like I heard she couldn't breathe and it felt like something was in the back of her throat," classmate Ayya Tawfir said.

Collier was having a great spring break on a school trip to New York and Washington, her mother said. The trip was her first without her parents.

    Her father was clearly upset.

"When you get a call at 8:30 in the morning saying, from a crying daughter, you kind of get a little freaked out. What's going on?" Randy Collier said.

The fun turned into fear when she was kicked off a Continental Airlines flight headed for home.

"The police were called. The ambulance, the paramedics were called. She had fallen asleep in her seat and woke up coughing and a whole bunch of people standing around her, and was asked to leave the plane," Collier's mother, Stephanie, said.

Teacher Maile Kawamura said a doctor traveling on the plane checked Rachel Collier and said she was fine, had no fever and did not pose a threat to other passengers.

Despite that, the family was told, the pilot insisted Collier leave the plane.

"Upon boarding the plane was asked to leave by the pilot because she had a little bit of a coughing spell," Stephanie Collier said.

Rachel Collier and her teacher were left to find their own hotel for the night and had to buy clothes and toothbrushes because their luggage was already on the plane.

Randy Collier met with Continental officials at the airport.

"'Who's paying?' I wanted to know who's going to pay for their clothing, hotels. They just left them in the middle nowhere. They didn't provide anything," Rand Collier said. "They just said they were going to pay for the hotel."

"I'm frustrated. I'm really, really frustrated. Why they would do that, especially with two teachers escorting 40 children across the United States, and for the pilot to make that kind of decision," Stephanie Collier said.

A day before the incident, 272 passengers aboard a Continental flight from Hong Kong were detained in Newark amid fears of bird flu.

Centers for Disease Control officials quickly determined some passengers had a "seasonal flu."

Stephanie Collier said she spoke with someone at Continental who said the matter would be dealt with internally.

Rachel Collier and her teacher are scheduled to return to Hawaii on Wednesday evening.

Please - you never, EVER get the real story in situations like this. The airline isn't going to comment because of a possible lawsuit, so all you get are the stories of the "victims", and yeah, like they are going to give you the straight scoop. And even if they did, it's still from their perception, completely discounting anyone else's perception.

Remember how guilty all the Duke lax players were at first?

It's unfortunate that this is the way it is - sensational story with one side of the facts, then by the time the WHOLE story comes out, you never hear it because something that ends up making sense is never news-worthy.

Not saying the pilot didn't fuck up, by the way, but I'm sure there's far more to it. There almost always is.

DISCLAIMER: I am a Canadian so I don't have the "I tripped over a stick so let's sue the tree" mentality...so read my post with some caution...

What could she sue for? Any legal minds here could tell me? She wasn't hurt...she's 16 so can she sue for lost wages?

I don't get it. Would I be mad....HELL YES!. Would I think about suing? NO! There is no reason to sue in my mind.

The airline should have given her a free flight to anywhere she wants...they should have put her up at a hotel...all that is on the airline's shoulders...but SUING is kind of out there in my opinion.

That's what she'll be suing for, as well as "mental anguish" and that kind of crap. I totally agree with you tho, that the US is lawsuit-crazy. The insane things that people sue over is just baffling.

I'd sue their ass as well. It isn't about the money. Donate it to charity. No way should she have been kicked off the plane for coughing when a Dr said she was OK and not a risk.

The airline had no right to kick her off the plane that is above and beyond....she, at the very least, should be reimbursed for any expenses incurred in dealing with being kicked off the plane...as well as for any inconvenience...put yourself in her shoes...the entire plane is being redirected because you coughed...she paid for her ticket just like everyone else...her coughing fit does not give an airline the right to treat her like a second class passenger or to overreact as they did...she should be compensated for her trouble & emotional distress

I flew to Hawaii two weeks ago. On the 12 hour flight, I suddenly had a sneezing fit that lasted 40 minutes. Nobody bothered me about it. Whatever it was came and went and I was fine. It was just allergies.

If the story really is what's been reported, that pilot was a jerk.

Oh, absolutely. I agree completely. My "lawsuit crazy" comment was about people who sue for dumb things, like $1,000,000 lawsuits for minor inconveniences.

    This happens all the time.

A few weeks back, they kept passengers on a 747 from China on the ground at LAX because one of the passengers was coughing. They kept them on the plane until doctors and health officials could board and check them out. The airline says there was a fear of SARS.

I think that this has only been going on for a few weeks that there must be some security alert nobody's talking about.

so you'd be ok with the fact if it was your 16 yr old daughter that was stuck 4-5000 miles away with no means to get home and having to find a hotel at her expense? it's not necessarily about the $$$, it's about teaching the corporation to be reasonable about things like this... if she was feared to be such a threat, put her up in a damn hotel and give her a transfer ticket to another flight the next day, pending that she's "medically cleared"... no matter what the story is, they left this kid out to dry... she's a minor in the state's eyes... yes, she had a chaperone with her, but that does not give the airline any excuse...

So back to what he said then. The airline reimburses her for the hotel and issues a voucher for a flight anywhere, hell throw in two of them. As fucked as it seems, you need to look out for the greater good of the rest of the passengers on the plane. Lesson learned for everyone involved.
