EVH quotes RS - 4-06-95
RS - In recent years, Roth has gone on Howard Stern a few times and talked about Van Halen. The way he tells it, he brought soul to a very white band.
EVH - If the blues and Cream and Led Zeppelin are white, then, yeah, I was very white. But I love the blues, and that's not white to me. He did try to get us to do covers like "Cold Sweat" and we'd do "Get Down Tonight" by KC and the Sunshine Band - ridiculous stuff for us. He loved disco. Probably still does.
RS - What would you say he brought to the party??
EVH - Shaking his ass. He was like an emcee, a clown.
RS - Can you imagine ever doing anything with Roth?
EVH - It's like a divorce. It's over and done with. But anyone who thinks he's ever going to come back is ridiculous.
This interview was done while Ed was at one of his most grounded points in his life....musically, and he was trying really hard to get sober. I wonder if Ed's sentiments will change back to this after coming out of rehab.

It's an interesting question.
Was he less grounded a bit more than a year later? 'Cause his talk of "baby steps" with Roth was certainly much less final than "over and done with".
Of course, "angels with elephant balls", piano intros from TV score composers, and the near-total banishment of those signature VH backing vocals also came at what was allegedly one of Eddie V's most grounded and sober periods - some three years after that quote. And what conclusions might we draw from 2004? That he had to be blitzed out of his mind to reunite with Hagar?
Dry, besotted - either way, some of our man's judgment calls haven't been entirely beyond challenge.Edward Van Halen lives forever.

Funny you should mention that. Some few guys around here might not like that potential reality, but it's a possibility nonetheless. I'd give it better odds than most VH fans, actually, if indeed Edward is in rehab and is successfully coming to terms with resolutions in his life.
However - and let me make this perfectly clear - this does not mean I'd prefer Ed getting back with Sam. I honestly don't care which singer Ed chooses to play with, assuming he wants to play with either of them at all, as long as he's happy, healthy, and he wants to play for himself, not his fans. I've seen Sam Halen and Van Roth enough to see neither ever again, and given a choice, I'll take a new album with either singer - plus Mike - over a tour with any one of them.

I have a guitar magazine from the 90's that has every interview they had ever done with Eddie through the years to that point.
Reading what he said back in the early days, up to the (then) present day, he contradicted himself so many times it wasn't even funny.
He has done nothing but continue the same trend since.
Moral: You can't believe anything he says. His words are worth the paper they're printed on. He's liable to do or say the exact opposite in the next round of interviews.
There are literally hundreds of examples of this through the years.
Love the guy's music and his playing, but he is the absolute LAST person that should ever be speaking for their band. He really should even have someone to speak on his own behalf.I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Eddie Van Halen should have been a politician. Don't believe anything he says, the very few times that he does say something that is.

So he's changed his viewpoints over the years. He's only human. I have no problem with people stating their opinions but I find it strange that some people just absolutely rip Ed to shreds any chance they can. How about we all just pray that he gets out of rehab more healthier and in a better frame of mind.

Sam, Dave, pah.
Relevancy is going down fast. Perhaps gone in a lot of ways.
The Tour announcement/cancellation and HoF disaster killed the momentum.
2008 coming fast, 2009, 10,....leaving VH glory years deeper in the past.
For a Roth-era fan like myself, its never been clearer.
I hope Ed does better just because I want to see him end up in a good way, but musically there isn't a lot riding on his future VH decisions anymore.
And Wolfgang shouldn't tie himself to Van Halen. Start something fresh and do it your own way, if he wants to become a musician in his own right.

I think they went from being Pro-Sam or Pro-Dave to being "anything goes, the singer is irrelevant." That's the most worrying evolution I see with those guys.
I would agree with VS about the album being the priority, but another necessary ingredient is the producer. They need someone who's gonna be able to make those guys walk straight and boss them around. All 5 of them need a dictatorial producer. Whenever VH, Dave or Sam have self-produced and been in control the results have been mediocre at best. Control has to be taken away from them into the hands of a producer who knows what he's doing and who's not gonna take any shit from them.Little Dreamer

Ed changes his mind more often than his shorts. Singers: Roth, Hagar, Roth, Milloy, Cherone, Roth, Hagar, Roth. Guitars: Frankenstrat, Kramer, Ernie Ball, Peavey, Charvel, Fender. From '96-'99, all he talked about was how clear and great everything was now that he was supposedly sober. Unfortunately, in that time period is when everything went to shit for VH. He seemed really mad at the world, and came off as bitter. Then, by '04 he was back on the bottle (and whatever else) and most people were like,
what the hell is Ed on? Hopefully he can get past his demons and make peace instead of making enemies. Unfortunately for us, the last decade has been wasted and for anyone to ever expect anything productive from these guys again is very wishful thinking.

If things go well in rehab the last thing Eddie will do is schedule a tour right after he gets out. With the history of this band in the past 20 years, the last thing we should expect to happen is the last thing that was supossed to happen.

I have a feeling Tulsi Gabbard will last the longest in Trump's cabinet and will eventually take over MAGA when he's out of office. Sorry Vance, but he's milquetoast. Tulsi is the future!
