one of my alltime favorite VH songs, just incredible. how they could have put crap like "strung out" on balance instead of this is beyond me.

it was a kick-ass tune that warranted double-dipping on this album and buying the import version... plus the artwork was different (no siamese twins, just one of the kids on the see-saw)...

I don't know why this was left off but it certainly meets the vibe of most of Balance, guess it would of made it too dark to be a Van Halen album even though I think it was one of their best

    i love this song.
i thought i read somewhere along the way that this song didn't make it because they ended up throwing CSLY on to have a more "radio friendly" song. can anyone confirm?
    SOME VH LINKS CLASSICS

"Sammy is fat, Dave is bald, Mike is next in line to be the Pope, Eddie is a drunk, Wolfie is fat, Gary is gay, CVH is VH, Mike is VH, Sammy can outsing Dave on a tequilla hangover, Eddie is a meth head, How Many Say I is the worst VH song ever, Up for Breakfast is a close second, Dave was horrible at radio and everybody hates the assless chaps.
Ok I think that covers everything." Ziggysmalls

"I sense that some of our newer passengers may be nervous due to the sudden turbulence. Please be seated, this is simply a normal part of the periodic ride.
I didn't say we'll get to the destination, but until Alex comes out a says what a complete waste of carbon DLR is, we're still climbing, so strap yourselves in.
Those of you who have been on this ride before, the hottie in the mini will be around shortly with your drinks......." Red

It was a miss not putting "Crossing Over" on Balance. Since "Baluchitherium" was sort of unfinished (it was meant to have vocals originally), maybe that one could have been left off. And, if anything, "Big Fat Money" was the out-of-place song on Balance.

According to the VHE, Ed wrote and recorded some of the song 'Crossing over' in '83! after a friend committed suicide and 'Strung out' is the famous trashing of Hamlish's piano, also in '83... so I guess Ed had his head in a box of old 83 tapes lookin' for ideas Wonder what Dave thought of the tune LOL.

I also read that Sam wanted Crossing over instead of Take me back

But I do agree it would of been better to feature it instead of that Ballybalothabollocks track, mined you when the wife comes up with the name, you'd better use it or end up in the dogs house

Yeah, that's true. "Crossing Over" was demo-ed by Ed way back when, and Sammy pushed to work it up for Balance. I guess the story on "Take Me Back" (from what I've gathered here) is that they were rushed to get it done. (I think it's a great tune with a nice variety of sounds and textures.)

I never understood why this is on balance, so sam couldn't get the lyrics down, they had other tunes they could have put on there like crossing over and a few others I could name that were done during the balance sessions. Truth be told, I hardly ever listen to the insturmental tracks from this cd. the record just kinda drags at that point to me.

the version of the song on You Tube has virtually no bass in it. During the intro harmonics section there are supposed to be bass notes through there.

But nonetheless. An epic song. one of the few VH songs without a solo.

Looks like I'm alone on this one but that song did very little for me. No question it should have been there instead of Strung Out or Big Fat Money, but even in that case it would have been my least favorite.

really? I think that song is bad ass, listen to it with headphones on, there's actually 2 versions of the song going on, there's so much cool shit going on. The production alone on it is worth giving it a thumbs up. Oh, well..to each his own.

    'Big fat money!!!' wow

To me Big fat money (guitar wise) is awesome, the lead break is out there with a jazz feel, so un-Ed like and the riffs Ed does behind the vocals blow me away.
This always, guitar wise, sounds better live, Toronto PPV etc. that said, I've got to say I don't like the vocal line, period, wish Sam would of cut back on the words and done more of a hot for teach approach.

Exactly. The guitar riff is solid but the singing gives me a fucking headache.

Such a haunting song but a great one. Very underrated in the VH catalog.
