    Default EVH Flanger Settings

    Hey guys!

I was wondering if anybody "in the know" knew the settings for the flanger for Ed's songs.

    ATBL
Unchained (I know it's got a preset, but I'm curious for learning purposes of the actual settings with the knobs)
    Seventh Seal

If anybody's heard the boot version from Wembley in 95 (the last six songs of the PPV cd's), the flanger is incredible. He also uses it on a passage in Right Now, but it appears to be the same settings as Seventh Seal.

    Thanks!

People on other forums tell I'm wrong about this, but I dialed this in on my MXR Flanger and it does Unchained bang on.

I'll give it a whirl later (the kids and such).

My knobs are different than that, they're big ole donuts.

Those should just be the rubber covers they put on so you can make adjustments with your feet. They should come right off. I personally have no use for them. I'm a 'set it and forget it' pedal person.

Does Ed put his flanger in the effects loop or in the line from guitar to amp? (I don't know.) That too will make a difference.

Pretty sure he doesn't use the flanger in the effects loop. The only thing I put in my effects loop is my delay and my sonic maximizer. Not that that matters at all.

I think I remember seeing his Balance rig on that British MTV special where his MXR stuff was kept out of the loop. Right now I've got everything (everything) running through the loop, and I'm not liking how the phaser and flanger are responding. I'll likely move both of them along with the extra overdrive/distortion options to a seperate "straight in" board.

So much for keeping things simple.

Nice pedal board there, lots of toys! Too many for me, I'd be all confused and hit the wrong one all the time. Yep I have the same EVH MXR Phase 90 and old MXR flanger as you, and I have them both in front, they are terrible in the loop. I also have an old Boss OS-2 that I use for a boost on solos out front. I have the same Boss DD-3 and it's in the loop. I also use a Boss Noise Suppressor for both the loop and the stuff out front, works great.

I didn't want to give up my original "orange" MXR phaser, but the script option on the EVH version sounded too good (excellent for humbuckers).

The singer in my band makes fun of me now for my pedalboard because, as he reminds me, a few years ago I was all, "If you can't do it with just a guitar and an amp, then you can't do it." Now I like getting all crazy with sounds; lately I hear a lot of parts and arrangements as "textures."

I've said the same thing and I used to only have like two pedals, but I just started acquiring ones I liked, so I started throwing them all together over the years. I still don't use that much, and definitely nothing like what you've got, but for me it's a lot.

    Here's what's in my rig...

    Furman SPB-8 Pedal Board:

    Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner
    Electro-Harmonix Big Muff
    Tech 21 CompTortion
    Boss DD-6 Digital Delay
    Rockson AD-80 Analog Delay
    MXR M-117R Flanger
    MXR EVH Phase 90
    Ibanez TLS Soundtank Tremolo
    MXR M-134 Stereo Chorus
    Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb
    MXR M-133 Micro Amp

Sometimes things get swapped out or added depending on the setlist--a wah, an envelope filter, etc. Just yapping on here tonight has motivated me to figure out how to re-route everything to move the dirt, flanger, and phaser up front.

I have the MXR EVH Flanger with the button. I've played with the knobs to try to match the exact sound of when the buttom was engaged vs off out of curiousity. As close as I can tell, Manual= 11:00, Width= 1:00, Speed= 11:00, Regen= 1:00. And it depends on the song where the flanger is... For ATBL (and stuff like Seventh Seal, Talk About It Later) it's into the front of the amp. For Unchained, it's through the effects loop (and I think the Regen is pushed up almost all the way). I use my MXR flanger into the front of my amp and use a seperate Boss BF2 flanger through the effects loop for Unchained. The BF2 has just a bit of volume boost when you step on it. I'm going to have to find the Wembley 95 PPV show to see what you're exactly talking about, but from other shows of that time, the Eventide is part of his sound and is added a chimey/fat sound, too.

Thanks! I'll have to try this out.

As for Wembly, it's not the PPV. The Toronto PPV from 95 has and audio cd (a two disc set, an actual factory produced boot) and the last six songs are pro audio from one of the Wembley shows. IMO, it sounds way better than the Toronto show. I think over seas and in the beginning of the Balance tour, he wasn't using the Eventide but for the Toronto show it sounds like it's on the whole show (if that's what is making it sound all chorus like).
