Use headphones and when your wife goes shopping, record your vocals in the bathroom.

It depends on how much leakage you (or your neighbors) can live with, and what one intends to record. One must set parameters. (For instance, if you live in an apartment, forget the idea, as spending money on a place one merely rents is self defeating.) Do you plan on recording with a drumset? Horns? Is the soundproofing for the benefit of one's family (merely keeping the noise down ) or of one's neighbors? Are you setting up for a band or for yourself?

Loons, Home Depot and the like sell the materials. Do a web search like Google first to get a rough idea and help make determinations.

When we did the studio for my last band, (and bare in mind that I was making a living framing and hanging, so I had ready access to material from a trade-only supplier, not to mention the option of purchasing the stuff with my boss's account and paying him back over time ) basically I used 3 5/8 studs to the cbs wall, insulated with the thickest insulation I could get, then rocked it with 5/8ths board. Rather than using simple furring strips and throwing up drywall, this gave me an extra layer of sound absorption. As the guitarist had a young and growing family, he had other uses for the room as well, so the work simply had to have form and function.

Not everyone has this type of option (basically demoing the existing wall coverage to the block, then framing over). And quite frankly, only because I could get the material on the cheap in the first place did we go through with it.

That's why I recommend the web search and "home improvement" method. One must first establish what one want's to achieve, and one must also determine a budget for the project.

Lemme know if this helps out at all, brother.

Here's my vision for my home studio...one of the walls I'm going to paint a picture of a scene from the Mississippi Delta...maybe a crossroads...another wall will be a scene of awwww say, Van Halen live in Largo '82...I'm goin' to paint the crowd...the view from the stage...another wall I'm a gwine-a paint a scene from a juke joint...right nah it's jus' me an' my twelve string acoustic and a whole lotta harmonicas...so I want to be able to do some blues shoutin' without scaring my Irish Wolfhound or the neighbors...when I get an electrical guitar...I'll jus' use headphones and record the vocals when my good gal's gone shopping or nobody's home 'cept me and my dog and the chickens...nobody here 'cept us chickens...nah nah yez yezzah...ooh well well...Ize livin' in a steel drivin' town...I hear that ol' lonesome train whistle all the time and it gives me dem blues nah nah yezzah...:debil:
