The last Great American rock band?

    Hello there fellow linkers:

This may sound too pretentious to some but think for a second or two.
Do you guys think we would care for better or worst if this band were none other that Van Halen?
I for one think that if Aerosmith or the Crue were in this "mess" we would give a shit for those bands.
But because it is Van Halen (a band that we really care about) like it or not. We make such a deal about it.

I have been a fan of this band since summer 1979, when one of my cool older cousins played Van Halen debut album in a piece of shit 8 track player, I was 8 years old, and listening to Eruption and You really got me back to back does some strange thing to a young mind like mine back in the day.
I bought the LP with my grandfather's (R I P) birthday present $20 dollars, I still have that album in mint condition 30 years later.
That is how much I love this band.
    So I ask you guys:

Am I wrong to believe that Van Halen is the last great American rock band?
    I think not.

Just listen to the radio right now and compared that to what VH has done over the years. You'll see what I mean.

Van Halen is the last and greatest Rock band in the world.

rock music the last 15 years has produced no one with any longevity...

aerosmith is still relevant (although debatable to many), and still tours regularly and puts out albums regularly... so if aerosmith went away, yeah i think people would care, and in 2006 it almost became a reality (tyler with throat surgery, hamilton with chemotherapy)... but aerosmith would've been over for events beyond their control (health issues), and not the drama/b.s. that we're subjected to with the vh bros.' circus...

to your point about the crue, i think the success of their reunion tour proved that there still a lot of people who still care about that band as well... it's a band with a total different vibe than vh (or aerosmith, for that matter), so it's hard to compare them... it's also a band that made their name on selling them as a sleaze band, so maybe "great american rock band" doesn't fit their billing...

i would throw kiss into the mix, but with only two originals still in the group, it's debatable...

what other u.s. bands came out in the last ~20-30 years (or more) that could've been in this company that had some success?:
    • poison? too poppy, and "only" sold 15-20Mn albums
    • skid row? no baz, no skid row... NEXT!
    • pearl jam? too much politics, and guess what? too many lineup changes!
    • nirvana? flash-in-the-pan overrated garage band
    • soundgarden? see nirvana
    • GNR? had they stayed together and continued to record and tour, yes; now as an axl solo show passing off as the real thing.... NO!
    • black crowes? it's basically the robinson's and hired hands, except that these bros. don't always get along; successful touring, but too bohemian to be america's best
    • twisted sister? the pride of long island, but i don't think most of america gets past their 2 or 3 biggest songs
    • metallica? oh yeah, the metal band that became a rock band that is trying to go back to metal... for all the crap thrown their way, they're definitely one of america's best metal bands ever, but i can't consider them rock

I really don't care about 'huge-assssss-rock-band' tag whoever of you would stick to a band, there've been shitloads of great ones in the last 7 years alone. I would rather listen to the guys who'd produce 2-3 amazing records and split up to carry on their daily life than watch my favorite band trainwreck itself after XXXX-years 'together' to what Van Halen is now.

Most of the bands from the 80s are still slugging it out there, and like em or not, bands like Poison, Motley crue are still in sheds, and if bands like Skid row, ratt etc. reunited they could be also.

Really I think most rock bands with longevity died with Nirvana. Since then they found out they could market bands who really couldnt play. Cobain started the whole "Not knowing how to play your guitar is playing with feel" and it would piss me off when people tell me that "playing technical has no feel its like a robot"

since then everythings been 2-3 year fads. and bands who are forgotten by their 2nd album

    alternative
    Pop-punk
    Nu-metal
    Emo

Rocks to serious now. bands like VH are timeless because the message doesnt change with the times.

Can't argue with that. It's sad that there hasn't been any good-solid rock bands in a loooong time.

At least it saves money on buying cd's since there ain't anything worth buying.

there are a lot of great american rock bands, you just don't like them. Music has just changed. Rock music still exists - it just doesn't sound like the LA Strip of 1985 anymore.

There are more albums worth buying now than in the whole 80s + 90s period of time. 99% of my CD collection have been produced post-2000 and the number is in dozens.

gunsnmotley what the hell are you talking about, what message have Van Halen, other than later Van Halen with Hagar have brought to a public? "Light up the sky whoa whoa", dirty movies, little kids are hot for teacher and JUMP JUMP? It's no surprise I come across mindless statement like this when the one has nothing to compare with apart from possibly mainstream crap that the one apparently confuses with modern music.

It's pointless to argue, same as trying to convince CVH fans that there was VH after Dave. I have nothing to lose though, I have more music of a better quality to listen to

Buckcherry is the only band that I've been able to really get into that is fairly new. Other than that, nothing's really caught my ear.

ehhh, they're ok. A good song here and there.

But yeah, they've been able to stick around.

Paw, the problem with a thread like this is that it has a bias embedded in it. One could argue that Van Halen was ok and had a good song here and there. I think American Idiot is sheer genius and as good as anything VH has ever done but I can see how people would say it sucks, just like we often do with Nirvana and the Seattle scene.

Rock music has changed, one could argue to their blue in the face about whether it's gotten better. I don't like as many rock bands as i did in 1988 but that's because I was 14 in 1988 and am 32 now. People my age are not likely to like as many rock bands as we did then. But they're still out there, just ask a 15 year old rock fan and they'll throw some names at you.

I'm shocked it took that long for someone to point that line out. Music is a matter of taste. Hell, 1/4 of the people on here think everything VH did after 1984 was crap.
