Which 7 songs would you choose?
My friend and I were talking today about which songs that,
if we could all play accurately, would make us feel that
we had technically mastered the guitar up to this point.
It was funny how our lists had a lot of the same artists, but
different tunes. We are primarily rock players, so my list is
primarily rock guitar-based.
I thought this might be a fun discussion topic. This is OPINION-based, so feel free to contribute yours if you wish. Also notice I said "technically mastered" for I know all too well that it takes a lot more than technique (thanks Kirk Hammett).
Anyway, my list:
1. "Eruption" by EVH. This will never be duplicated note for note.
2. "Metropolis" & "Under a Glass Moon" solo by John Petrucci.
3. "Attitude Song" by Steve Vai
4. Any Albert Lee song
5. "Little Wing" by Stevie Ray Vaughan
6. "Leyenda" by Andres Segovia
7. "Far Beyond the Sun" by Yngwie MalmsteenHow open-minded do I have to be before my brains start spilling out?

I don't know about seven songs. There's so many from many genre's of music. I like a lot of your choices.
I've always been impressed with Steve Vai's musical knowledge and ability to read, write, and transcribe music. He's been at it a long time too, he transcribed a lot of stuff for Zappa's band when he was basically a kid.
"Bangkok" & "Fire Garden Suite" set the bar pretty high imo. He wrote a lot of it including the orchestrations on the fly in his tour bus, just paper and pen. When I read that years ago it reminded me of the Amadeus movie when he's writting the Requim.

If I had to choose 7...not 6....not 8...but 7 songs in which I would love to play perfectly!
1. I'm the One (actually it's more fun to improvise on early VH because there is more room for it...but this songs kicks ass!)
2. Pleasure Dome (the solo in that song is RIPPIN')
3. Baby Please Don't Go (Aerosmith cover...I'm sorry but I don't know who originally did this...Willie Dixon...I don't know why but that name rings a bell...so I'm not sure)
4. Hangman Jury (Aerosmith; this song might be my fav. Aerosmith song; no other rock band can pull off the shit that they can)
5. Me Wise Magic
6. Fire in the Hole
7. Mine All Mine
I'd say Spanish Fly...but...let's not get crazy! I'd say Eruption but so MANY PEOPLE play it...it really isn't an accomplishment to play it...however...I have yet to see ANYBODY who has played it right. My man, when you are fantasizing, don't go for attainable, you can get attainable at the local Applebee's. - Dave's Dreidel

Man in the Mirror - Tuck Andress Version, if I could play this one song, I'd be happy.

...seven?!? Just give me TWO:
"I'm the One" - At my VERY BEST, I'm only hitting about 85% of this song at any one time. There are obviously some passages from other VH songs that give me fits (and probably always will), but as a whole, start to finish, this song will give me fits until the day I die, I do believe.
"Little Wing", SRV - 100% completely untouchable. In those very rare moments where I delude myself that I can even attempt to learn SRV's take on this song, seven seconds into it I'm lost by the sheer magnitude of his playing.
And my mind is simply boggled to think that SRV played that song routinely on early '60's "boat-oar" necked strats with 0.11 string sets on 'em...
