That's a first-year quilt top that he was given years ago. The other guitar player (don't know his name) was also given one (an amber quilt top) but later sold it. It showed up on eBay sometime last year.

That's exactly right Andrew! I saw that amber quilt on Ebay for something outrageous like $3600? Anyway it was really odd in that it didn't have much quilt in it. It was very plain with just a bit here and there. Overall I didn't think it was that good looking of a guitar other than the fact of the first year quilt status and the story behind it. You?

The lack of figuring in the quilt maple they were getting was the reason they switched to flame maple. Even Eddie's sunburst quilt he played on the '98 and '04 tours was only kind of nice. But it's the rarest production version of the Wolfgang made--something like less than 2,000--and people are big on thinking the earlier ones were made better. (All of my Patent Pending Wolfs are excellent, but the one that shines above all of them is my '04 dark cherryburst Standard made in Meridian; in terms of quality of materials, craftsmanship, stability, reliability, tone, and feel, it is most definitely a cut above the rest.)

Well it's cool to see a wolfgang out there. It's not a great top. I don't own one. I've played them, they are nice guitars. That particular top is weak though but again, nice to see wolfgangs out there.

People are still playing them as much as they ever were--same as the EBMM and Axis. (Hell, I'm not putting down my Wolfgangs until I play something I like better, and that hasn't happened yet nine years in.) At any given time there's usually at least 40 or 50 Wolfs up on eBay, and first-year quilts and custom shop models pop up fairly frequently.

I have a quilt top. The quilt sucks but the wood grain is cool looking. I think that is the charm of the quilt tops because they all look different. A lot of people say the pat pending Wolfs are the best but my favorite Wolfgang to play is my production 04 Black Standard and that is saying a lot because I also have a few Custom Wolfgangs.
