Default For those who dare to compare!

There was talk around here that the CVH tour could possibly rival The Police tour this summer. After witnessing The Police sell out GM Place(Vancouver 20 000 seats) in less than 15 mins as well as TWO Toronto shows(in the same amount of time) I would have to say that this will be a David and Goliath event. Even U2 would have trouble matching The Police numbers this summer.

    I'd agree
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

interesting choice of metaphor... Diamond Dave and Goliath...

The Police is a complete reunion with real management and p.r.; Van Halfass is a 3/4-reunion with someone from the porn industry "working the p.r." generating next to no publicity for the band...

you know, maybe they should've changed the name from Mammoth to Goliath... then Eddie wouldn't have felt so empowered that the band is named after him, therefore he's the boss, etc.

One thing could really turn this around, but I really doubt it will happen:

Put Dave in charge for all the promotion and business decisions. Keep Ed in charge of musical direction.

If DLR were whipped up and not being restrained for fear of upsetting Ed's apple cart, we would be seeing a whole different machine gearing up.

This is Apples and Orange's compared to the Police tour. Maybe a little better compared to the re formed Genises tour. I think Van Halen will do closer to the Genises numbers then the Police.

Van Halen will probably sell out a few shows here and there where they always had a strong following but I doubt we're looking at mass sell-outs like the Police have the oppurtunity for.

Janie is doing an excellant job of promotion. She hasn't spent a dime. VH has been all over Rolling Stone. The new picture of the band is out, thanks again to RS. She is doing a fine job of getting the people talking about VH.

I'm not so sure about that. Without some competent management, I'm not sure they have what it takes to keep the initial attention they are going to garner. I don't have a whole lot of faith in the fact that these guys can function that well in today's media. Dave's machine would be different, but I'm not so sure it would be any better.

When i was a teenager having my favorite band outsell other bands ...yadda yadda meant i was the cooler for being thier fan. Things have changed since then and now i couldn't care less if all thier shows sell out or just one, i enjoy thier shit and that's all there is to it. The Police were kickin back in the day and had a wider fan base cause hard rockers liked some of thier stuff as well as the lighter side. VH was for more a targeted audience ( actually two targeted audiences because the Sam and Dave eras had thier own sound) and we all know we can't have the best of both VH worlds together so thier fan base will be somewhat split when it comes to deciding to attend or not!!

VH announced the tour 2 weeks ago with a little snippet on their website. So did the Police. The Police did their little rehearsal and press conference just a few days later, a day before the 1st pre-sale. 2 weeks after the tour announcement, Dave said more on Rolling Stone.com than any member of The Police have so far, with the full interview still to come next week. And no announcement of the ticket sale dates yet or intinerary. Once those are announced, meaning they have something to market and sell, I'd expect more PR.
Wolfie is not Mike, but he's more than ok.
Mike is gone, but not forgotten. They played some amazing shows from 2007-2015; some people are in denial about it.

Uh...yeah right....she's doing a bang up job. VH is all over the place...compared to The Police who opened the Grammy's, played at the Whisky and announced dates that were sold out in minutes. Now there's a novel idea...playing for the media to show you still kick ass and giving concert dates. VH is still trying to figure out if they are going to do the Mall Circuit or open the new Wal-Mart in L.A.

The Police used the Grammy's to kick of the major PR and tour announcement, i think VH are waiting for the RRHOF to do the same.

Sting released many mainstream, successful albums during the last few years, while DLR released the "Diamond Dave" pile of crap. And VH itself has been generating negative publicity for the last 10 years. They basically are their own "negative PR machine" and have worked consistently at demolishing their credibility in the music industry.

the difference with The Police tour is not the last 2 weeks, more like the last 10 years of dysfunctional, disgusting pettiness that has been going on.

Forget the Police, let's compare with the Motley Crue "Carnival Of Sins" tour. I bet VH will not match those numbers.

And yes that idiot Janie is doing a horrid job at PR - anyone who works in PR will confirm that. In Los Angeles, you DO NOT hire a Valley Porn publicist to do mainstream PR of a huge event. Just doesn't happen.
