Default The last great Van Halen song!!!!

I'll go Me wise magic. Its pretty good, even though I'm more of a Hagar fan.
Humans being is in my Top 5 VH songs ever, but Me wise magic is pretty much they're last great song that lives up to real VH standards.

VH 3 standouts were Year to the day and Fire in the hole I thought.
I say Fire in the hole just for Eddies guitar outro.....that was awesome, but really nothing on the album is worthy of essential VH.

As for Best of both worlds....Not Sammys best stuff with VH, very lame.

    Top 5 songs since 96:
    Humans Being
    Me Wise magic
    Year to the Day
    Fire in the hole
    Respect the wind
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"

"I am in a blissful state. Dont bug me!!!" - Richard Dreyfuss "The Goodbye girl" 1977

MWM is a pretty good f'n song. It's an example of what VH can do when everyone does what they're supposed to do isntead of ed trying to do everything himself which has been the case with most stuff post 95. I've gotten more and more into HB as time has passed, it's probably tied with MWM right now.

I think the 04 stuff started off real well if you consider LTS was the first song they worked on but went downhill from there, LTS is a pretty decent song, too bad they fell apart after that.

Without you has some really cool individual parts but overall just doesn't flow very well....but by that time VH had stopped being VH and had morphed into the "eddie van halen band"...

Learning to see had brilliant verses.......but thats it, the chorus was terrible.
It was a wasted song, but had potential in parts.
    Its about time.....terrible
    Up for breakfast.......good intro, then.........bomb!!!

i will basically echo most of you:

    dave: me wise magic

sammy: humans being; i didn't mind the 3 new tracks on bobw, but hb edges them out

gary: not a big sample, but without you was pretty good

    My top 5 since '96...

    1. Me Wise Magic
    2. Humans Being
    3. Without You
    4. Can't Get This Stuff No More
    5. Once

The songs on BOBW were frustrating to me. I thought they all had great intros and then just lost it.

"It's About Time" seems just disjointed after the frst 30 seconds or so, and the lyrics sucked.

"Up For Breakfast" I thought was great from a musical standpoint, and that's what made it the most frustrating song of the three. If the lyrics were even half way decent, I think it would have been a great tune.

"Learning To See" was like "It's About Time," disjointed musically, and the lyrics were again - AWFUL.

Yup... the production on the three new BOBW tunes fell short. But--sans UFB lyrics--they all were good songs, just frustrating because their potential wasn't met.

Production, performance, engineering, and mix on MWM and CGTSNM was all top notch. Dave, however, sucked. It was like the band had evolved to the point he couldn't keep up. I remember thinking at the time, about the upcoming album with Cherone, that if the songwriting and sonic quality sounded anything like the two Best Of songs, that VH was gonna be awesome. Hmm... guess not.

"Dirty Water Dog" stands out as a great VH song to me. I also frequently find myself playing the riffs to "Without You" on my guitar. I guess that means they're pretty catchy.

It's a close call for me. I guess I'll go with Humans Being. It's always a little painful to go back and listen to that song and think about what might have been. I guess that is the down side of going out on top instead of slowly fading away.

There are only a few songs that I vividly remember hearing for the first time. MWM was one of them. I remember actually getting that stinging sensation you get in your nose when your eyes are about to tear up as I was thinking "This is it! The old VH is back! If they can put out a whole album like this, it will make up for Sammy being gone!" Alas, it was not to be.

The rest of post '95 VH:
CGTSNM sounds more like a solo Dave lounge song to me. It just didn't do it for me.

LTS sounded like a post VH solo Sammy song. Did he have more of a role in writing that one? I can count on one hand the number of post VH solo Sammy songs I really like and that isn't one of them. I did like his pre-VH solo stuff, so it's not like I'm anti Sammy.

VHIII - Not their best effort, but not any worse than Diver Down. A long time ago, another poster said that those who like VHIII like it "only because Eddie went ape-s*** on the guitar." Well, yeah. Gary's vocals were good and the lyrics were okay. This wasn't 5150 or Fair Warning, but it shouldn't be treated like it never happened either. The biggest thing it had going against it was that neither Sammy nor Dave were singing on it. Of course, we later learned that Mike wasn't playing bass on it either, but I digress. In the grand scheme of things I would say that where most other VH albums are solid from beginning to end, VHIII had six solid tunes on it (Without You, One I Want, From Afar, Once, Fire In the Hole, and Josephina). That's two to three times more than most other non-VH albums. Don't believe it? The reason why music downloading became so popular is precisely because people got sick of paying $15.00 for a CD with only two or three good songs on it.

3 new songs on BOBW - I'm in agreement with everyone else here. It was forced, disjointed and showed a lot of unfulfilled promise. Probably good for any other band, but not VH.

In honor of John Cusak's character from High Infidelity, my Top 5 since '95:

    1. Human's Being
    2. Me Wise Music
    3. Fire in the Hole
    4. Josephina
    5. Without You
"Now take off my Van Halen shirt before you jinx the band and they break up or something!" - Robbie Hart
