    Just a question, of sorts.

Why do bands insist on putting 1 or 2 or more "new" tunes on a best of compilation? How do they qualify as best of or hit, when they are new? I understand if they may not be putting anything new out in the way of an album or anything, but still....why?
One noticeable difference between Judas Priest and Metallica...
...Judas Priest only has one gay guy in the band.

This made more sense before the net and all the downloading legal and illegal. Basically it was to get the fans that already had all the hits to buy them again. As always comes down the $$. Still can't believe that VH will have nothing new or unreleased on this new one.
Rest in Peace Edward Van Halen

yeah, the one or two new tracks to a "best of" is to entice the hard-core fans of a group to still buy the "best of;" they already have all the hits because they own the albums, but if they are a die-hard fan, they will want to "complete" their collection...

the casual fan is buying the "best of" for all (or some) of the other tracks, and won't care about the new tracks unless they are current singles that are being played on the radio...

similarly, certain retailers will get "exclusive versions" of regular cd's with bonus tracks to get you to buy it from them instead of somewhere else... def leppard did this the worst most recently where 2 different retailers (bestbuy and target) had different versions of "yeah!" (each with a set of two different bonus tracks), and itunes had an exclusive bonus track available if you bought the complete album download... thankfully to fans, walmart's bonus tracks were available on a separate, stand-alone cd... so if you wanted to get all possible tracks from the "yeah!" record, you had to buy 2 cd versions @$9.99 each, a download version for $9.99, and a bonus tracks cd for $5.99... or, in other words, spend about $40...

Yes that was really lame of Leppard to do that. I just posted a rant in the present/future forum about bands constantly repackaging their shit and throwing a nugget in to make their fans have to re-buy a disc full of stuff they already have. It's lame even one time, much less three or more times (Aerosmith, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Def Leppard....)

No shit, eh? So...basically they're releasing one of the two albums they should've released in 1996? What are we going to find out next - they scrubbed off Mike's work and replaced it with Wolfgang's, a la KISS' Smashes, Thrashes & Hits (well, I mean, Gene didn't use Wolfgang, but it still sounds as if they re-recorded Peter's and Ace's parts with the players du jour)? This whole situation just reeks. All these years looking forward to a reconvening with Dave, and it's just a big ol' massive fuckup.

Ah well, rumours have it the Police might hit Tampa, and though $50 might seem a bit high, if the missus keeps working (and the levee don't break) I might have to take a shot at it.
