they played it on the 88 tour and stopped playing it in 91 cause Ed signed a deal with musicman and couldn't play another guitar onstage or something like that.

    ..and one more note...

I think they last played it in April 1990 at the opening of the Cabo Wabo.

Well - I don't wanna derail thi sthread, but are you saying Ernie Ball isn't a good company? I have an EVH EBMM and it is an incredible guitar!!! (Not to say that Fender is not, as I have two of those...)

All of Ed's signature guitars have been excellent. The Kramers built for him were top notch, the EBMMs were true to the best in their construction, the Peavey Wolfgangs (my personal favorite) were well built and an awesome "next phase" in his design, and the Charvel/Fender stuff is great too (though severely over-priced).

I don't think they stopped playing "Summer Nights" after the OU812 tour because of Ed's guitar. Yes, the song required a trans-tremolo bridge that would lock in different tuning positions, but Ed could've had one of his EBMMs equipped with it if he so desired. (He had a Wolfgang Special with one which he used for "Fire In The Hole" in the studio and on tour in '98.) Also, though I don't know the specific details of Ed's contracts with Ernie Ball and Peavey, he was allowed to play other guitars for a small portion of the show (probably like 90/10 or so). He was playing Wolfgangs on stage in '95 as early as July even though his contract with EB didn't expire until the end of September, and he was playing the Charvels on stage in '04 despite his contract with Peavey not ending until December.

this is true, you can see it in one of the "viva van halen" clips on youtube, they're playing it in the background while CAri and Ricki are interviewing people. I think it's a black trans trem guitar ed's playing. They also played 5150 at that show...

Ha, they skipped the whole solo section. That solo on Live Without A Net Eddie is flying. I think thats the best solo ive seen/heard him play within a song, and I sure wouldnt like to be the guitarist to attempt it either, no one could play it anywhere near as good as EVH did, and I think the "Other Half" knows it.

Of course "The Other Half (ass)" couldn't play the solo. I mean come on, Vic Johnson, Sammy Hagar??
