What type of guitar are you wanting to build? Check out Warmoth's wood descriptions here...

Wow man, if only it were that easy...

Look man, that's like saying which chick on the planet has the nicest ass...too many of them do.

Fortuntately, there are quite a few body wood/neck wood combinations that work quite well. Then again, as guitarists, I'm sure WE all know what's best. And the truth is, well, Ed's old mantra...or Doc Fisher...if it sounds good it is good. If some pretentious tone dork says "that neck sounds like shit with that body"...well, even they could be right - or they could just be a tone dork. Granted, I think there are grounds for shitty assed wood, but If some clown says "you have to do it this way"...well, they may be right...for their ears, but not yours. But A&Z makes a good suggestion, but even then, TRY different body/neck combinations and see what you like with what pickups - cause you can't leave the pickups, bridge, nut, and amp (etc.) out of the ovreall tone equation.

Choosing the "best" type of wood to build a guitar is mostly personaly preferance. Me personally, I like alder and basswood w/ a quilted maple top for bodies and for necks, I usually stick with maple or rosewood. But there isnt really a set formula for making the best guitar, its just what type of wood you like.

I like a Swamp Ash body with a birdseye maple neck. I have had good luck with the Warmoth products. You can save some money and apply Birchwood Casey's gun stock finish to the neck. This is what Ernie Ball used on the EVH model and still uses on the Axis. I bought some for like $9 and the neck came out real nice. There is enough in the bottle to finish several necks. Just a thought...

For a telecaster style guitar I much prefer a maple neck for snap, but it's really a matter of taste.

my best sounding combination came together by coincidence..
a solid (black) korina body with tru oil finish and a bloodwood neck with ebony fretboard! extremely fat and heavy sounding!

But remember that a lot of other parts make up the tone: the pickups, amp, bridge and even the frets and nut!
