    Default VH Insane Marketing Strategies

IF this Best of 1978-1984 release (CD/DVD) actually occurs, and does not include any unreleased tracks or new material:

. Rhino's marketing strategy is inconceivable. It seems certain the album could not possibly break even?
. Surely a successful person like Janie Liszewski would reject such a flawed business plan.
. Surely Alex (not Ed) would understand the net affect on Wolfgang's career aspirations going fwd, as credibility of the 'the band' falls to an even lower low (is that possible??)...

    Surely not??

Forget about the album... how are they gonna market this tour?!?!? And what are Ed and Al gonna say in interviews??? They have said repeatedly that they WILL NOT work with Roth again.

    I can't wait!!!..................

Whatever they end up saying, IF ANYTHING, you can now guarantee that it will be a bunch of bullshit.

The fun-loving, good-time party band we used to know and love is dead and gone. Maybe it was a facade all along. Who knows anymore.

absolutely right!!the fun loving party van halen band has long since evaporated.its a screwed up revolving door lineup of hire and fire. and when its convenient for eddie to tour or record he asks himself "who is more likely to put up with my crap at this moment and who can i handle?" he never says to himself lets function again together as a band like we did succesfully for 18 years. like hartley peavey said "ive never known somebody who demanded so much and offered so little back in return."

Marketing? Look at the tour in '04. They did nothing to promote that tour, no press to speak of, little mention on the radio and a re-hashed lineup that we have all seen before. At the end of the day, they made a ton of cash and really didn't have to spend any to make it

Skip to '07. No "official" word from the band and the media has taken the reunion rumors and ran. Same situation, reunion rumors are flying without any effort by the band, they are in the papers, cnn, etc. This is rogue marketing at its finest. They haven't had to pay a dime for all this pub.

This is 2007, not 1982. Marketing a band, or entertainment for that matter is competely different. This is the biggest "potential" reunion in R&R, all they have to do is sit back, pick their spot and make an announcement, all the leg work is already done.

If you think about, from a marketing perspective, you can't buy this type of hype!!

Its just amazing to me that a person (EVH) can continually talk about how he LOVES to make music and is basically a hermit in a studio (suposedly). YET NO MUSIC EVER SURFACES. 12 years and a whopping 2 instrumental cuts on a half assed porn soundtrack? WTH?

It makes little since from a business perspective, a personal legacy perspective ....a random drunk at the end of bar in bumbleweed Idaho has more sense.

Doing the Prince thing and packaging a CD with tour tickets is just one of a hundred possibilites.

I fear that they will be mocked on a future episode of VH-1 I Love the 80,s series. Well even more than now.

I agree. If there's no new material, what's the incentive to buy? This strategy has worked for others--Gene Simmons, who repackages the best of Kiss every three years, comes to mind.
"With me in the band, it's one of those miraculous 97-97 deals. It's 97 percent you and 97 percent moi. Is it Mick or Keith? I don't know" -DLR

"We eventually started playing clubs, and we also did weddings. We played everything from the Ohio Players to K.C. & the Sunshine Band. You would love the sight of Van Halen doing 'Get Down Tonight'! But by the third set when everybody was good and tanked up--boy, we'd be blazin'!" -Michael Anthony

Hype?!? Outside the narrow confines of the VH internet fan community, there's virtually no buzz at all for this tour so far. In fact, much of what I read on other band's boards is mostly negative. Many people bring up Roth's failure in radio and Eddie's infamous appearances and especially that awards ceremony photo where he looks like Golem. And the issue of bringing in Eddie's son in place of Mike is really having much more of an impact as far as the casual fan's opinion about the tour then I would have ever thought.

This band and has a huge hurdle to sell this tour to the general public if they want it to be successful. The fact that it appears it will be a relatively shot 3 - 4 month Summer tour with 40 dates or so is indicitive of the PR problems and unwillingness of promoters to book a truly huge worldwide tour that now dog Van Halen.

    T.B.
