Mutt Lang needs to get those fools into the studio and whip them into shape. Lang would produce a comeback album with these guys that would make Aerosmith's comeback look feeble.
I sincerely believe that Lang just might be the only guy that could harness these guys and make it work. After seeing what he did with Def Lepoard , AC/DC and Aerosmith plus all his other body of work I am convinced.
There is no doubt in my mind that Van Halen needs an album with any sort of comeback. A novelty show alone is not what Van Halen is about. You get Lang on board to produce and you will have record labels bidding at the rights to sign VH.
This is my first post on this forum so go easy on me.

I swear I thought he worked with Aerosmith on one of their biggest albums. Maybe someone here can correct me if I'm wrong. I tried finding a resume' for him online and he's kind-of a mystery guy... The last thing I see he produced was the new Corrs CD. I dont expect that to enamor him with the VH faithful but he was the man beind Pyromania, etc. He demands the best and has a clear picture of what a band is capable of and what their sound is. It doesn't matter if it's speed metal or country music.

Mutt is one of the if not THE best producers in the world......and one of the nicest you will ever meet.
He runs a tight ship and can not only get some of the best performances out of bands, he gets the sounds too....
But here's the problems I forsee....
1.) Mutt would clash heads with Alex on Snare sounds......He would make it sound right.....exactly the way Alex hates it.
2.) He is on your ass from the moment you get into the studio, till He says You can leave... The playing video games, and bullshitting for hours would go right out the window. Ed used to say Ted T. was a bastard to work with.....Mutt is 1000 times worse.
3.) He likes to spend Months on an album.... Malcolm young literally had to tell Mutt to "Just stop, we've done it right 10 times in a row, it's enough!"
His real value is in the sounds though. He would make eddies guitar sound better than it ever has...If You can believe that.
But he's expensive, and probably doesn't want Eddie banging his wife.....like he did to his "good friend Ernie Ball."
Another good producer would be Martin Burch.... But he's retired.Vegetarian is Indian for Lousy Hunter.<br />Opinions are like Assholes everybody has one

I think you are thinking of the late Bruce Fairburn for Aerosmith, another formulaic hit producer.

I'll tell you all who Van Halen needs, that is Andy Johns and Ted Templeman. Remember what happenned to Van Halen with the help of these two men. Need I say more but 'Top of The World'.

Ted and Andy are guys to do it. Although, Mutt Lange would be pretty good. Just keep him away from Mike's vocals or they will sound like Def Leppard.

Speaking of Def Leppard, I heard short bits of their new album on some site and I did not find one song that sounded like anything I liked. Steve RIP, Def Leppard misses you. I have not liked anything they have put out since Hysteria. I heard in an interview somewhere that Elliot and the band were embarrassed by some of their earlier works. Unbelieveable. Before Eddie or the band begins to worry about who produces their next album, they have to do the following (in no particular order):
1. Get a CREDIBLE lead singer to join the band . Not some one-off all-star deal, a real live singer. Maybe it's Sam. It's probably not Dave.
2. Hire a manager. Right now Van Halen is a rudderless ship. They need some professional direction.
3. Secure a record contract with a MAJOR label . Sony, Virgin, BMG, Geffen - it doesn't matter.
4. Write some new music as a group . It would be a bad idea to force the music Ed has surely created over the past few years down the throat of a new singer. They should work together, as a band.
5. Play some unannouced dates at clubs . Get in front of your fans - create some excitement. Play some new musice mixed in with some classics. Become a BAND again.
After they do all of this, then it's time to go producer hunting. Maybe Mutt Lange is the guy, maybe not. All I know is that Ed must have someone that has the stones to say no. If anyone doubts that, dust off Van Halen III and give it a spin.
Welcome to the boards Cajun Mike!

Agreed Mutt is a great Producer... I would add though that Eddie Kramer would be my 1st pick as Engineer. Kramer would offset Mutt's fanantical approach to perfection plus bring a creative element to the sound that I believe would work best for Ed, Al & Mike...
Those 2 combined would produce a masterpiece IMO.Woke up this mornin, got Blue Moon in your eyes...

I don't really know who should produce it, but as far as a sound guy/producer/whatever its called, they need to get back whoever did the sound on the Balance album, because the sound on that album blows all their other ones away. Not necessarily the best songs, but just MONSTER sound. They could have farted in the mic on that album and I'd be banging my head. The sound mix makes the songs even better.
As far as a producer, I know his name seems to draw shit from everyone, but why not Bob Rock? I think the Metallica Black album had the best sound of any of their far and away. Again, its disputable whether it has the best songs, but the sound on that album is HUGE. I think he may be the guy to put VH back on the board as something other than a joke.
