I'm gonna have to pick F.U.C.K. for this one. The sound it so huge and alive. Almost as if you were right there at 5150 watching them make the music right infront of you. Alex's drums have never sounded better. I also believe that Eddie wanted to make up for the lack of Mikeys bass from OU812. I'd like to hear everybody elses opinions on which albums they think had the best production.

For a good creamy mix, I'll have to agree with you Tim.
My personal fav is VH1 though. Raw. Just plugged into an amp with a mike in front of it and play live.

Either Van Halen I or Fair Warning. Listen to the drum sound at the beginning of Dirty Movies. Truly awesome!

I'd say "Balance." Everything sounds great! I like the big sound of F.U.C.K., but the guitar sound is a little too bassy.

I'm with Goo. The sound on FUCK is too thick. I'd say it's almost as bad as the production on VDIII. VH1 and Balance are the ones I pick, and then DD and 5150.

I have to say Balance-it's full, crisp, yet blended. I loved FUCK when it came out, but now, to my ears, it's a bit bloated.
The one thing VH had generally lacked was a good production of their music, which is a real shame; to this day, I hear VH2, WACF, and Diver Down and realize that I can get better sounds on my 12 track with minimal equipment. They were a huge band with a tiny sound on MANY records; they were probably the only band in history to consistently sound 'better' from a production standpoint LIVE than on tape.

Guitarsolos....
My point is that, to me, the 3 VH cd's I listed sound like cheap demos. I don't think it's hard to get a better sound than those cd's; having years of engineering experience, I can say that without a hint of dishonesty.
Obviously, you like the sound on those cd's, OR you are of the opinion that Van Halen has always SOUNDED better than the rest of the world. You're entitled to that opinion, and I am entitled to mine. As for my recordings--unless I muster up the nerve to devote my life to a recording career, they are mine for my own listening enjoyment. BTW...success has nothing to do with sound quality--good sounding records have failed and miserable sounding records have gone multiplatinum.
And if you haven't noticed, technology is WAY ahead of what it was when those records were recorded, so it isn't too tough to get great sounds nowadays.
