Although I speak not one word of Dutch, I decided nonetheless to do a translation, thanks to the Dutch-English On-line Dictionary, amongst others. Keep that in mind when reading this. There doesn’t seem to be anything groundbreaking. Here goes...

AMSTERDAM - Dutch rocker Eddie Van Halen has claimed to have recovered from cancer. [translator’s note: I found this next sentence very confusing…] That erased uncertainty about his shape from the illness he just had.

Begin 2000 werd er al gespeculeerd over de gezondheid van de inmiddels 47-jarige hardrocker. Hij werd toen gesignaleerd bij het M.D. Anderson kanker-instituut in de universiteit van Texas, Amerika. Van Halen verklaarde toen echter bezig te zijn met een programma om kanker te voorkomen. Achteraf bleek dus dat hij de ziekte toen al had.

The initial discussion over the health of the 47-year-old hardrocker began in 2000. It is then he sought treatment at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Institute of the University of Texas, America. But Van Halen claimed then to be busy with a program in order to prevent cancer. [translator’s note: The following sentence is very iffy…] After was found to be therefore that he then had the illness.

Nu is er echter weer goed nieuws te melden. De in Nijmegen geboren zanger heeft op zijn officiële website een boodschap voor de fans achtergelaten, waarin te lezen is dat hij weer helemaal gezond is.

Now, however, there is once more good news to report. The Nijmegen-born singer [translator’s note: zanger = singer in Dutch, though they must mean guitarist] has through his official website left a message for the fans on his condition, wherein to read is that he once again is fully healthy.

This looks like "The Nijmegen-born singer ... " even though (obviously) Eddie is a guitarist. Was this an error by the paper, or can 'zanger' mean 'guitarist' in Dutch?

It's quite possible it was an error by the paper. When my newspaper does the birthdays, they always screw up EVH by saying "Rock singer Eddie Van Halen is (insert incorrect age here)."

That's the most likely scenario.

you're right, Zanger means singer. stupid mistake for a dutch newspaper! Gitarist would be dutch for Guitarist... see, it's not difficult at all!
