    Default EVH Replica Discrepancy...

So, in the NAMM and GW videos Ed claims that the builder at Fender recreated Frankie from pics only. Yet in the GW interview, the builder says they kept sending the original Frankie back and forth, between Ed and Fender, whenever they needed to check something out?

I'm betting Fender had to have had the original, at least at some point. You don't leave something like this up to pictures, no matter how good they are. What does everyone else think?

I'm guessing photos were used for painting purposes. Most likely they (Fender) had to examine the original Franky for specs on the pick-up, body, neck, tuners, etc...

The 1st proto-type of the replica was done from pictures... Ed was impressed and then lent Franky to Fender for further refinement.

If it weren't for the interweb... none of these details would be around. The whole mystic thing would live on, like they are trying to spin it.

I noticed that too... that they took the original to make patterns from it. They took it apart and the designer, Chip even said he took the pickup out of the original and was scared that he broke it cause it wasn't getting a reading for volts or something.

It's well stated in GW magazine.
If eddie were down and out on a sidewalk playing guitar I'd be next to him with a bottle and a blanky braving the cold. I would be sucking my thumb happily making chupa chupa noises in sync with the petroglyphic sounds that came from the mighty finger tips of Edward Van Halen.

Yes, it's been said and said again. The first replica was built from pictures and research. For the second and third generations (the third being the final) Chip was allowed to borrow the original. Nobody's trying to lie or mislead; they're just playing up the accuracy of the first one built.

One thing that I wondered about was what pickup was in the original Frankie?
I remember in an interview EVh said that he took the original pickup out of the Frankie and put it in the Black and Yellow VH2 guitar but that didnt sound good, and I read in another interview where he said a fan reached up and pulled the pickup out of the guitar one night on stage.

Also, what neck did Fender copy? The original neck had been changed many times. Various Kramer necks where on it during the 80s.

That info is in the GW article. I *think* the neck was either the original or the most recent Charvel neck (probably the former), and the pickup is the original Gibson PAF. Seymour Duncan did the replica pickup.

I wasn't suggesting that there was any lying or misleading going on. It makes that Chip built the prototype from pics and then got ahold of the actual Frankie to tweak everything that came after. Thanks.

I was just about to point this out myself...hmmmm...

BTW, mods, you guys think we could get one thread on all the replica details going? WAY too many happening for my taste and time...thanks!

P.S. - No offense to all posting what they come up with. It'd just be nice to have all these snippets in one place...
