Sting : "I'll join Van Halen!"
PBS' Performances presents Sting
Pop star charms critics with a performance at the press tour
By BILL BRIOUX -- Toronto Sun
Sting performs a song for NBC's Christmas In Rockefeller Centre TV special. The pop star will be featured in the PBS Great Performances series on Feb. 26.<
PASADENA, Calif. -- "I never thought I'd play to a room full of critics -- without dynamiting the place."
That was Sting's reaction to performing his new classical album Songs From From The Labyrinth for TV critics at press tour Saturday night.
The dapper pop star has gone all 16th century, performing songs written by Elizabethan lute master John Dowland. PBS shot Sting performing the melancholy music at his Italian villa for a Great Performances special airing Feb. 26.
Sting -- who looks more and more like Mats Sundin -- sat on a stage surrounded by candles and played various lutes. He was joined by musician Din Karamazov, who joked that he was "the second-most well-known lutanist in the world."
During the hour-long set, Karamazov broke a string on one of his hand-crafted lutes. Cracked Sting, "every time you break a string a sheep dies."
For an encore, Sting -- whose voice sounds as pure as ever -- treated critics to his Police hit Message In A Bottle on the lute.
After the performance, he was asked about rumours of a Police reunion. "You know, it's the 30th anniversary," said Sting. "It would be nice to do something to celebrate. We don't quite know what, but we're talking about it."
Sting insists he's "good friends" with ex-band mates Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland. "I'm deeply, deeply fond of both of them," he said. "I'm very proud of the band that we were in."
When it was suggested that the two bands fans most want to see reunited are The Police and Van Halen, Sting playfully joked, "I'll join Van Halen."
Well, at least that would solve the "15 year old kid playing bass" problem. But would Sting be willing to stay in the background with Dave as frontman?

Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!
...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

Does this mean The Police would get MA and a frontman to be named later.

Two thirds of The Police plus one half of Van Halen equals...seven sixth. There you go, The Seven Sixth. New band featuring leftovers of Van Halen, and The Police.

Sadly, at this point I'm much more excited about the prospect of a Police reunion than a CVH reunion.

If Sting thought the Police were dysfunctional, wait until he gets a load of the Van Halen freakshow!

Actually, he can. As far as I know.... I haven't kept up with Sting's last few albums. But from what I see at Live 8 or whenever else he shows up on TV, he's singing the high notes really well for a guy in his 50's.
So put him behind the mic and let him do the harmonies. And when Dave takes a break in the middle of the set, they can always break out "Message in a Bottle" or "Can't Stand Losing You".Eat Us And Smile
