The sustainer pickup in the neck is the pickup that keeps the string vibrating, it's more like sending a magnetic signal than receiving one. (If I've read the basics of sustainers correctly).

Yes, you pretty much have the general idea. The Sustainer pickup is always in the neck pickup GUITAR5150 ok!

Yup, and Eddie's always been partial to the single coil version; there is also humbucker version (I've bought that one and will soon install it in a Wolfgang). Also, notice the two switches that accompany it. They're for activating the sustainer and the switching the pitch option.
