Van Halen stands on the verge of the MOST important single of their career. If it isn't good, and well-received, it's over. VH may sell-out arenas on the tour, but they will pereceived as a nostaglia band.

First and foremost, the tune needs to be catchy, and pop-oriented. Top-40 stations will have to play it, and play it alot. It will be tough to sneak it amongst the puppets and rappers, but it's necessary to make the return.

Second, it needs to be the right length. Releasing "Without You" as 6:40 track was absolutely ridiculous. Who's going to play that? Forget the argument, "Eddie can release any song, no matter how long. If they don't like it, fuck em'!"
Common. Certain things need to be taken into account. "Why Can't This Be Love" was the perfect comeback. It rocked, it was catchy, and at 3:30 it was the perfect length.

Another thing I was thinking about. I know some of you become irrate when VH is mentioned in the same breath as Bon Jovi, but...
"Slippery When Wet" sold 12 million. "New Jersey" about 10 million. "Keep the Faith" 10 million. Their latest? 500,000, and that was with a hit single!
Is there still a market for VH?

I know VH is a much better band than the pretty boys of rock, but those numbers should be thought about a litle bit. I hope the boys sell a shit-load, but can it be done?

It should prove very interesting to see what kind of numbers VH pulls in with a new album with Dave. I agree that a couple of radio friendly tracks would certainly help their cause but let's not forget that "Without You" off of VH3 was a number 1 single and that record did only a little more than 500 000 units.

Yeah, you've gotta think that if VH3 can pull half a million then this next record will do at least 5 times better. That is kinda interesting about the bonjovi thing - their single was in the main charts in the top ten for a while I think. Yet they only sold 500,000. Then again ther rest of their album was pretty weak. The best think about VH is that (apart from VHIII) they release albums that are full of good songs - they don't rely on a hit single as much as bands like bonjovi because their entire albums are full of good songs.

Umm...I think every VH album has 90% or more great songs. I think VH3 even has mostly good songs. The only song I skip over is "How Many Say I"...most of the time. There's probably about two or three VH songs I dislike, but out of their huge catalogue, I like all of the other ones.

Your figures are off. Bon Jovi HAS indeed gone platinum, and that's only with one single out thus far from them. As for Van Halen, there's no way in hell they'll ever get on top 40 radio this year. Simple as that. The album as a whole needs to be good, only then will people go out and buy it, and chances are these people will only be those who have purchased Van Halen albums in the past.

If BOV1 is any indication, it has the potential to pull 2 million just from Dave's involvement alone.

I apologize in advance, but the only way for me to give my opinion here is to drag out my boring theory that I've posted before.

You don't sell out arenas (and especially stadiums) on the strength of hard core year 2001 VH fans. With a veteran band with VH's history, there will always be a fairly large segment of the crowds who are there for the nostalgia of it. And these people will be there regardless of how good the first single is, or how well it does on the charts.

And when the media covers VH, the concentration will likely be on the past, not the present. If a TV station does a 2 minute segment there may be brief clips that are current, but I'd bet that a majority of it will be past pictures (Jump video, clip of Sammy etc). And the music accompanying it is much more likely to be an old classic than any new song.

I'm not sure that even a hit single would be able to eliminate the nostalgia perception. No matter what, the classics are going to get the best response at concerts, but that's just reality for a band in Van Halens' positon. Personally, I don't really care too much about the singles or the record sales. I'll be as excited for the new songs as the old ones.

Glenn's on to something there. They probably won't be seen as a going concern until (if) they get a second album out the door.

I dont think they HAVE to put out some catchy pop tune to make it, actually i think it would be nice if they would release a harder rockin' song to let everyone know the Van Halen of old is back so everyone will know what they're in for, so all the new fans will know this is a hard rock band. Let them know the hard rock style Van halen is back, which has been missing for a long time. I dont think Van halen will be considered a nostalgia band as long as they have a new album they are touring for. Now Kiss, they turned out looking like a nostalgia band. Although im a Kiss fan and all, thats pretty much all their reuinion was about. Nothing new, just a quick buck.
