    Default Recording?

Looking into simple 4-8 track recorders....was thinking about a Fostex MR8 any ideas about this unit, or others in this price range? Thanks for now for all input!

Korg and Tascam also make consoles in that range.

I have a ZOOM 16 track, and it's cool - BUT - it has a lot of imbedded control features that drive me nuts and a ton of extra features I don't need (drum machine). To adjust the EQ, I have to goof around on a sub-menu and press a botton. I'd preffer to turn a knob to a spot and leave it there.

I also want easy to understand directions and self-explanitory inputs (Guitar/Bass, Keyboard, Stereo) or at least clearly labeled inputs.

You may look into a mastering software once you've got your rig figured out.

Just guitar, bass and maybe a drum track...just home recording. Nothing too elaborate.

I had the fostex 16 track thats now down to 699. has built in cd burner.

Lightning took it out, so I am thinking about going computer based.
There is just so many converters out there to choose from.

then id go computer based, especially if you can a program that does both recording and midi sequencing, because with midi sequencing all kinds of possibilities open up.

You can go with lots of programs. The most popular is protools (I think) but I use cubase and at a music conference the general concensus was that both programs are excellent.

You just get the program plus a special sound card that can run midi and a small mixing board maybe 4 channels.

or better yet, you can get a line 6 tone port, which is what i currently use.

I'd reccomend shopping around, i just ordered cubase to replace the pirated version of fruityloops i had, it should do exactly what i need it to do.

I use Ableton live with guitar rig. You don't need anything else.
Cubase and protools is also ok.
Whatever you choose, buy a decent soundcard.
Be ready for my new amp "III OSIS" produced by H^3 in stores soon [that was funny in 2006]

hydrogen does what fruity loops (its a rhythm / drum / percussion authoring software) does and its free as in no cost and free as in freedom (gpl licenced).

it also is cross platform if anyone uses linux or osx or whatnot.

there are a few free multitrackers out there too but the ones i know of are only available on linux.

after that you just need a sound card or two, some crappy mikes and you are off and recording ambient sounds (amp) or you can plug directly into that guitar unit like guitarman said and record directly to your box.

thats pretty much all you need to get started. past this point you start getting into prosumer gear, but for home users its usually not worth it.

i have abelton as well, but i didnt dig it. I found for writing it was great, but for coming up with a finished product it was extremely irritating, i dunno it maybe just me though. How do you use it batch?

Goota' say, Line6 tone port looks pretty damn cool. Anyone ever use guitar port with rifftracker?? Looks pretty cool also plus it has drum tracks built in.

i used to use guitar port w/ rifftracker. its useful for writing, but i didnt like not being able to modify the existing drum tracks, and the whole interface isnt really conducive to getting things very polished.
