    VH and Schlitz Gay

I remember that SNL's commercial parody, "Schlitz Gay," featured the song, "Beautiful Girls." I saw a re-run of it tonight on E!, and the VH song was replaced with some non-desript, generic guitar piece.
Anybody know what happened with that? Did VH sue or something?

I don't know about deets, but the suits are always on the lookout for stuff like that. I have the original with the music that shoulda stayed there. Maybe the guys didn't like being associated with a gay brew? Or maybe the Diamond One took offense, if the latest rumors are true.

Dunno. But it's a kewl commercial.

To use songs from an artist or band in a broadcast situation requires license of that song from the owner. SNL probably licensed "Beautiful Girls" for the original broadcast, but to save money on syndication (re-runs) and/or DVD sales, they replaced it with something generic.

Was it "BG" on the original? When I saw it on re runs, I thought they changed the music, then I began doubting myself.. Then I couldn't remember where I put the remote, then I went outside without pants on, and the day was shot to hell from there

    Funny commercial!!!!

I believe they played the beginning guitar piece of "D.O.A.", then went into "Beautiful Girls".

Licensing can be a nightmare, even when rebroadcasting or reissuing something that was previously licensed. Aside from the obvious example in the SNL piece, the worst case of this I ever saw was in the late 80's VHS release of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". Anyone who is familiar with that movie can probably quote at least half the songs in the film and tell you exactly which scenes they belong in. To see a cut of the film with generic non-music thrown in the place of the originals really destroyed the whole movie.

Thank GOD they fixed that situation and restored the original soundtrack in time for the DVD release!

Maybe someone with the SNL "Best of Adam Sandler" (or Chris Farley) DVD will let us know if they reverted to the original Van HALEN song for the official release?

WKRP in Cincinatti was totally butchered in syndication as well.

It's also why the Game Show Network doesn't show reruns of Name That Tune or The Gong Show. They would have to relicense all the individual songs which is too expensive.

WKRP, one of my absolute favorite shows, was exactly what came to mind when FORD posted about Fast Times. I hope the actual versions of WKRP will someday be out on DVD.
