An Elizabeth High School teacher has been arrested and charged with having sex with a member of the school's football team during an away game in Glenwood Springs last month.

Darcie Esson, 32,

an English teacher for four years and sponsor of the student council, is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old football player on the floor of her hotel room while her two children, ages 4 and 8, and their babysitter slept in the two beds, according to the arrest affidavit. The female babysitter is also a 17-year-old high school student.

Parker police Monday night arrested Esson at her home in Parker. She has been charged with sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, a Class IV felony. She spent Monday night in the Douglas County jail and posted her $25,000 bail today.

Reached by telephone, Esson declined to comment, as did her father, George Esson.

She has been placed on paid administrative leave by Elizabeth School District Superintendent Robert Neel. The unidentified football player remains in school, Neel said, but will face discipline measures for alleged alcohol consumption by a minor. The school has 809 students in grades 9-12.

The incident came to light, according to the affidavit, when the football player began boasting that he lost his virginity with Esson, prompting a 16-year-old female student to tell the school's administration on Dec. 13.

According to the affidavit, the football player is a former student of Esson's and the two have had an ongoing relationship for some time, having sent at least 120 text messages and phone calls from him to her cell phone.

The football team traveled to the Best Western Antlers Motel in Glenwood Springs on Friday, Nov. 10, for a playoff game the next day against Rifle High School. Esson, whose divorce became final that day, took her children and their babysitter to Glenwood to watch the game, even though she had no affiliation with the team. They stayed at the Best Value Inn, in a room that had been reserved for her by school principal, James Trevino. Trevino, contacted on Tuesday, said he had reserved several rooms for people watching the game, including Esson. Trevino stayed that night at the Antlers hotel where he helped supervise the team, he said.

On Friday night, Esson went drinking with several parents, one of whom drove her back to her motel room after midnight, the morning of Nov. 11, according to the affidavit.

The football player, whom the coach had already caught sneaking out of his room earlier that night, climbed out his back window after midnight and walked to Esson's motel room, the document stated. The player told authorities later that Esson was drunk and tried to get him to drink, which he said he declined.

The couple had sex on the floor while the two children and the babysitter slept in the room's two queen-sized beds. The babysitter told authorities that the football player left at 4 a.m., which the football player confirmed. The babysitter later found a used condom in the bathroom, she said.

Middle school teacher charged with having sex with students

CLINTON, S.C. | A 23-year-old female middle school teacher was arrested Wednesday, accused of having sex with five boys, authorities said.


Some of the 14- and 15-year-old victims were students at the school where Allenna Williams Ward taught; others went to a different school, Clinton Public Safety Director John Thomas said.

Investigators said there could be more victims.

Police began investigating Ward, who is married, after a note containing inappropriate messages was recovered by school officials, Thomas said.

Ward was placed on administrative leave with pay last Thursday, acting district superintendent Laura Koskela said. A message left for the school's principal was not immediately returned Wednesday.

The incidents occurred between December and earlier this month at various locations - including in the school, at a motel, in a park and behind a restaurant, according to warrants.

Ward is charged with five counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor in the second degree and six counts of lewd acts on a minor, according to arrest warrants.

She is being held in jail awaiting a bond hearing, police said.
