    Recommended/Denounced Boxed Sets...

There are some "boxed sets" of music that have been issued that are truly worth the cost, such as The Faces "5 Guys Walk Into A Bar" or The "Kiss Box", sets that include well put together liner notes and photos, along with an inspired track offering.

Then you have tripe like Bob Dylan's "Biograph" ( ) with it's almost painfully clueless and pig-headed song selection.

Some seem great at first yet begin to pale as time sets in (Why must one dig through several cd's in order to listen to side one of Led Zeppelin's "Presence", which is spread over two collections? ).

I'm going to Best Buy this week. What sets have been released over the years that you would recommend either for sainthood or damnation?

(Yes, the search function was tried in this effort, and as usual came up empty.)

    Thanks in advance.

I think Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' "Playback" is one of the best box sets ever - 3 discs of album tracks, 3 discs of other stuff

Can't go wrong with the Police Message In A Box either - about as complete as you can get (only 3 tracks that I know of are missing)

ZZ Top - Chrome, Smoke & BBQ - not much rare stuff, but if you don't have a lot of ZZ Top (or you have the first 5 albums in their remastered form), here's a way to get a bunch in a hurry

The Lynyrd Skynyrd box is pretty tight, too.

Elvis Presley - Artist Of The Century is good, but has a few holes ("Kentucky Rain", "Moody Blue" anyone?)

Clash On Broadway, Aerosmith Pandora's Box - not bad, but a couple of omissions each.

Fleetwod Mac 25 years - The Chain is great, but I believe out of print

Cheap Trick's Sex, America, Cheap Trick missed a lot of potential (about a bazillion soundtrack songs should've been there)

The best box set I have is probably "The Bocephus Box" by Hank Williams Jr.
Not my usual sonic breakfast whisky, but I heard it at a house wrecking party (pre-remodelling) and there were some very interesting covers (Aerosmith), live versions (Country Boy will Survive) and gems from the past.

No! Do not derail this thread by turning into yet another VH Boxed set thread.

Try looking around the site first, perhaps the search function?

    Bill's right...The Police's Message in a Box is great.

(which three tracks are missing, Bill, and on what albums are they?).

Anyone who enjoys a good drinking party has to have a copy of the Bocephus Box

It seems that the box either came with "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86" (4:47) or "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86 - Dance Mix" (6:23), so which ever one is on your copy, you're missing the other. The B-side of "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86" was - ta da - "Don't Stand So Close To Me (live)", which is also not on there. And then I have a promotional single of "Wrapped Around Your Finger" which contains "Wrapped Around Your Finger (live)", which is omitted as well. However, since both live tracks were from the Atlanta concert, if you have the Police Live album, you essentially have those cuts (only without the neatly done fade in and out of the crowd as found on the singles!)

Chiming in here regarding good to excellent box sets, imo the best ones are either hard to get imports or out of print. Here's a few I've really enjoyed:

    Tough To Find and Pricey:

The Cult - Rare Cult (7 cds worth of demos, unreleased tracks, remixes and the entire, unreleased Peace album recorded in 1986. very hard to find now and goes for over 200 bucks on ebay)

Iron Maiden - Eddies Archives - (6 cds of mostly live shows and b-sides in a neat tin box with a bunch of knick knacks like a small whiskey glass, etc)

    Easy To Find:

Nirvana - With The Lights Out (lots of demos, rare tracks, etc plus a dvd full of rare and live footage from their entire career.)

Judas Priest - Metalogy (not a lot of rare tracks, mostly juts an excellent career-spanning collection of their best tracks plus a live dvd from '82)

Thin Lizzy - Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels (same as above, nothing super rare but 4 cds that span the band and frontman Phil Lynotts entire career)

KISS - Kissology (good mix of rarities, live cuts, unreleased gems and typical hits)

Motorhead - Stone Cold Deaf (Good set but some repetition among some songs. I think there's 3 versions of Orgasmatron here)

Jimi Hendrix Experience - (lots of out takes and rarities. Good way to get a comprehensive overview of the rare Jimi if you already have the studio albums on cd)

Queen - The Crown Jewels. It's all the Queen albums you'll ever need (the 70's stuff in other words). Sadly there's no bonus material here at all, but the mastering of these CD's blows away the 1990's Hollywood Records releases.

Ac/Dc Volume 1 - I doubt you'll be able to find a copy, since it's out of print and it took me damn near two years to find it. All 6 of Ac/Dc's original studio albums with Bon Scott. Again, no bonus material here, except for the stuff you already missed by buying the chopped up US versions of their albums. If you see it advertised anywhere, do not hesitate to grab it.

Another vote here for the Police and Faces boxes. Both excellent. Tom Petty's Playback as well. Lots of good stuff on there. Bruce Springsteen's "Tracks" is another great collection of unreleased stuff. He's supposed to have another one out next year. Imagine a recording artist with a long history opening the vaults for his fans. You reading this, Eddie?

If you're even remotely a Deadhead, you gotta get "The Golden Road 1965 - 1973". This is the epitome of what a boxset should be. It contains every album the band recorded for WB records, with enough bonus material on each disc to double the length of the original albums. Plus a 2 disc set of early demos and live material called "Birth of the Dead 1965-67".

There's a second Dead box called "Beyond Description" which covers the band's later career on Arista which is no doubt put together much the same way, but I don't have that one yet, so I can't officially endorse it.

And if you're a really rich Deadhead, you can always pick up the Complete Dick's Picks Collection, all 36 volumes (all double or triple CD sets) for right around $650.00
