Default WHY DO THEY STILL DO IT?

    Here is a question:

If Ed was in this for the money, wouldn't he tour every year, instead of worrying soooooo much about how much he was going to make on a tour every 2-3 years??? Wouldn't he do interviews and promotions and try to get the word out???

It doesn't make sense. The only reason these guys do anything anymore is for ego, fame, self satisfaction and fun. I don't think people this old with this much success and money can make great new music anymore. They just don't have that fire deep down inside to kick some ass. Every once in a while they get it back and a moment of brilliance comes back out...

I hope this is one of those where whoever is involved goes out there to kick some ass and take some names. I don't want any more half-assed shit. If your gonna do it.... go big or STAY HOME! The 2004 tour, the only one who kicked ass was AL. He seemed stoked to be there.

I hope ED is getting pumped and playing his ass off at 5150. I hope he lights up the stage with some of the most incredible guitar playing we have ever seen... otherwise, why do it??????

Yeah I think it's funny that Ed used to say that he couldn't get Sammy to go out and tour. Sammy has been on how many tours to VH's 1 since 1998??!! Including '04, I think 5 tours to VH's 1. Yeah Eddie wants to show off Wolf's abilities but do it the right way would ya??!!

I think you've answered your own question. He makes plenty of money touring every few years and he doesn't even have to bother promoting anything. If you had to work only 1 out of every 3 or 4 years wouldn't you do it?

I'll buy the first 3 reasons for why Ed and the boys decide to do something once every half a decade or so, but frankly, I don't think this band has had any fun as a whole since about 1988, which is probably just as big of a reason for all of their problems as anything. I think everybody in the whole band is taking themselves way too seriously and that sucks.

It just seems like everybody in (or not in) this band and a lot of the people associated with it have this weird kinda misery loves company attitude now. Relax and just go play because you love it and you want to have some fun. If you don't love it and you can't have fun, then just hang it up and be done with it. I don't want to go watch everybody fake being happy and having a good time again. Do it for the right reasons or just call it a day. Sorry for the editorial.

based on 2004 he didn't much enjoy touring so that's why he doesn't do it every year. He probably doesn't need the money enough to justify doing something he doesn't like.

From all we've heard he loves playing with his son so maybe this tour (if it happens) may turn out to be a happier Eddie. And I'm sure most of you will piss all over him if it happens. This doesn't sound much different than 96, he was so happy to be on stage with Gary and the majority of his fan base pissed all over it. Maybe that's part of the reason why he doesn't like it anymore - the business end of it has really taken over. The day WB told him who could be in his band the joy of music seemed to come to an end for Ed. Hopefully Wolfie can bring it back.

I think Sam, Mike and Al all have fun on tour (except for the 2nd half of 04).

I think Dave is learning how to have fun on tour again after doing the early morning gig on the radio. He seems re-energized and lost part of his ego.

If Ed can learn to have fun again... I think it will make all the difference in the world.

That's the way I feel. VH has, in almost every case, given credit for songwriting to every band member...so, why not record some new music with Wolfie and set him up for even more royalities down the road...

WHY DO THEY STILL DO IT? Good question. It is sure not for the music and not for the fans. If it was for the music, then they would release an album and not more repackaged same old. If it was for the fans, then they would tour a little more and again, release some new stuff.

This is nothing more than either 1 of 3 things. 1. Money grab: I dont buy this one. 2. Swan song: Could be a final tour with them being in the RRHF and going out with Dave. (nah) 3. Make Wolfie famous: This is the most likely one.

Think about it. Wolfie does get some old school street credit by being Ed's son, but the current rock crowd (young) probably could care less about him. With Wolfie actually joining VH and going out our tour will bring a lot of press and even more credit. This way, when he goes out on his own he will have a better chance of success.

I am not sure I can blame him (Ed) for doing this. Most of us here are parents and would do anything to help our kids become successful. Either way, I dont care. My only concern is for good music. I love the Van Halen style of music and that is all I need. I dont care who is doing what, as long as the music is good.
    Fair Warning... It's 5150 Time!!

I know Ed is jazzed about his son's musical abilities. If Ed tours for cash only, he would of dragged Roth on the road in 96/97.

You guys are right. If it was $$$ only, He would have stayed on tour with Sam in 04'. Ed needs to feel trust and inspiration and not contempt for the people He makes music with. He may have been repressing anger feelings in 04'. With Al and Wolf, he probably feels more like a brotherhood and less the "what's in it for me" mentality. Wolfie may indeed be the lynchpin in this renewed fire Ed may have. I know that being around my younger students and their excitement over music and my playing abilities always rejuvenates me.
This may be the case for Ed. It's like Willy Wonka trusting all of his candy making secrets to Charlie Bucket, as opposed to adults. (and I'm referring to the Original with Gene Wilder, not that piece of Shit that Tim Burton put out.)
