Default Marshall Mg series, and tone......

Sorry if someone has already started a thread about this, But I wanted to know if anyone owns any of the newer MG series amps. I have a small one (only 10 watts) that I got for xmas last year), and I am undecided on it. I have never owned a tube amp, so I have nothing to compare to as far as that. The tone I get is decent out of it. I typically use the clean channel with a Boss chorus ensemble, and a Boss Ds-1, in that order. Is there anything I can do to my amp to get a better tone out of it ? I've considered buying the MXR 10 band eq, but cannot buy one until the end of the month, perhaps. The tone I am striving for is more of a "Balance" tone. Any thoughts, suggestions, ect ? Thanks for your help !

I don't own an Mg, but I can tell you right now, you might start heading in a different path if you're looking for a "Balance" type of tone. First off, I would lose the idea of investing in the MXR eq if that's what you're trying to achieve. If you want an affordable amp, you make look at something like a Roland Cube, or one of the Peavey Transtube series.

You've got to have a budget in mind. If you're going to keep the MG, and play through that, then investing in a modeling pedal may be the better way to go. The ZOOM G2 is one of the best acquisitions I've gotten a hold of. There's some bitchin amp models on there, including a 5150 model. No, it won't sound "exactly" as if you were playing through a 5150 combo or stack, but it's a damn approximating sound. There's a detune on there to approximate the harmonizer detune, bitchin delays and verbs. I would seriously try it out if I were you, and should fit your price range if you were lookin at buying an MXR eq. An affordable amp with a larger speaker/wattage rating would be a good mate with this setup as well.

I used to own a Zoom 505 processor many moons ago, and I have been looking @ the Peavey TT 25 watt amps as a replacement. What exactly is the detune, and how is it relevant to the sound ?

There isn't anything "Marshall" about that tone.

You need something with less bark, less vintage warmth, less smokey growl. You need something with 6L6 power tubes, and a**loads of modern gain.

At the very LEAST, you'd need that Soldano stomp box. I still think you'd be off. I'm fresh out of ideas. You're making my head spin.

Sorry I am making your head spin.... I am just getting back into getting serious about playing, so I am a little rusty....

Ok dude, detune is an effect Eddie used via his Eventide Harmonizer to split his guitar to both sides of the stereo spectrum. Basically it provides that chorusy sound that became part of his signature sound becoming most prevalent on 5150. This can be achieved on a number of effects units/pedals. Eddie had a mix between his dry and wet signals, and I don't know of any units in this price range that let you isolate left/right wet/dry sends, so for now man, I wouldn't worry about the stereo factor.

The G2 knocks the dogshit out of any prior Zoom processor I've used before, as well as most other modeling units I've tried. You don't "need" a Soldano preamp. It's about what you can spend and how loud you can crank it up.

makes sense, so that's why chorus sounds like shit when it's distorted.

So, a small update........ I ended up buying the Peavey TransTube 258 EFX amp today from best buy, ended up paying 179 and some change for it. It was supposed to be a xmas present for me, but when I got home, I couldn't help myself, so I cranked it up. MUCH better !!!! It comes preloaded with onboard effects, but they are cheesy for the most part, but the amp sings with my Boss ds-1, ce-5, and my mxr evh-90. I stopped by my local guitar center to check out the Zoom G2, but they don't sell them, the guy I asked even sais "there are better ways to spend your money". Oh well, I am happy with what I have for now !

Glad you're happy with your purchase STC. Let me give you a few words of advice though. Try the amp distortion without the DS-1 in the chain (to see how it sounds and spend time tweakin it) and don't put much stock in any "advice" someone at Guitar Center gives you.
