michael angelo is one of those guitarist who i KNOW is a phenomenal player, but im really not a huge fan of. To me michael angelo is just too cheesey for me to get into. Theres no soul or voodo-magic in his playing like there is in ed's.

im not trying to descredit his playing in anyway, hes a very good guitarist, he just chooses to use his skills in ways that dont really resonate with me.

I used to hang out with this guy who was a great guitar player and he used to talk about how technically good angelo was...I just was amazed at how fast he can get and the tricks he can do..he never played anything that I heard that gave me the same reaction as anything ed had done at that time.

Ya know, my take is this, he's good no doubt, but I just hate guys that play that fast. If you can play that fast, and make clear/crisp sounding notes, more power to ya, but for me it all sounds like you're trying to kickstart a Boeing 747. Just seems to busy for my ears to enjoy.

But, there's alot of people who like that style of guitar playing, and I say ROCK OUT WITH YOUR COCK OUT!!! Steve Vai is a great player that plays fast, but has soul mixed into it, as well. I'll just pass on it.

great guitar player... not a great musician.

fun to watch for a bit, but gets boring real fast. but I am just not into shred.
I can watch vai or satch for hours even with no vocals.

isn't that the song for galaga the video game?
If eddie were down and out on a sidewalk playing guitar I'd be next to him with a bottle and a blanky braving the cold. I would be sucking my thumb happily making chupa chupa noises in sync with the petroglyphic sounds that came from the mighty finger tips of Edward Van Halen.

i met this guy a couple of times ay guitar shows and such, he's an awsome guy to talk to and hang with.
he once even said the only reason people pay to see him or buy his bands c.d.'s (nitro id his bands name) is because of the sheer speed of it people are amazed, he said they dont have fans they have curious people come see them play.
so im pretty sure he knows which side his breads buttered on, he knows its only a gimmick but hell he's still going
he'll be around for a while yet

and if i remember correctly he had his action set really high, so high infact i could hardly play his guitar. this was when he was endorsing washburn guitars the one he was playing at the time was an mg44 if i remember correctly he also had this double neck thing with left and right handed necks which he played at the same time

"I'm going to give you the keys to the Lamborghini!"

Um - I checked my mail box. Nothing.

Seriously, the guy's a technician and excellent at what he does. If I could make money doing that, then I would do it.

On a vaguely related note - I did a studio session last week. The song was BB King's 'The Thrill Is Gone'. It was an acoustic version, so we didn't need to ape the original. Just as the engineer was about to hit 'GO' for the lead break a thought entered my tiny little mind, and I turned to him and said "You know what? I'm not BB King, I'm not a fraction of the player he is, and I can't play like him. I'm going to do my own thing."

I switched my Line 6 Variax 700 Acoustic to the 'Nylon' preset and played the best solo of my life in one pass. It was a John McLaughlin/Al Di Meola/Paco de Lucia/Larry Corryel kind of thing. The others in the studio stared at me open-mouthed when it was done. I will post an MP3 of it here when I get a mix.

The moral of the story is this: I wasn't good enough to play as simply as BB King, but I was good enough to do my own thing. Speed is relative. BB King's technique is as good as Allan Holdsworth's, and vice versa - if your yardstick is the ability to express emotion through a guitar, not how many notes a second you play.
HERE AND GONE by Haylen Beck (Stuart Neville writing as...) - "It doesn't get better than this." - Lee Child, "Highly recommended." - Harlan Coben, "Cancel all your plans and settle in for the ride." - Ruth Ware, "This is a book that lives up to the buzz." - Alafair Burke

I have to admit... the jam Rainforest that I'm watching is pretty cool. But I agree that this guy is justa gimmick. I mean when he switches fast from the top and the bottom of the fretboard... I mean... come on...

big props to ya dude theres not enough people out there being themselves, they're always trying to be someone else. it never hurts to be realistic and original in your approach, so good on you for not ripping the original and staying true to yourself
