I heard somewhere that VH actually recorded some songs with Dave for, what would have been, 5150. I'd love to hear any of these if they're available. Anyone know?

Summer Nights is reputed to be one--the story goes that Sam "improvised" lyrics on the spot.

"Good Enough" is another I've read somewhere over the years.

I've read in David Lee Roth's "Crazy From The Heat" autobiography that he wrote and performed almost the whole 5150 album with the boys and at the last minute, they canned him and re-recorded the songs with Sammy. If that's true, then I'd love to hear Dave's version of 5150! However, I'd bet that those tapes have either been destroyed or will never see the light of day.

They never "canned" him, he quit. In the book Dave stated that he had worked on the majority of the album. He also stated that the music was becoming "morose" and that he did not want to sing these "melancholy power ballads" and that the rehearsals sounded like a bunch of "sick cats". So, who knows what was rehearsed with him. But, I cannot imagine Dave taking a crack at "Love Walks In" or "Dreams" it is just not his style. I can imagine him with songs like "Good Enough", "Summer Nights", "Get Up", "Best Of Both Worlds" and "5150".

when this topic came up once before here, as it does every few months, i think someone said Alex had stated he had dave's version of what became "summer nights." also, of course, we know dave was working on a tune called "eat thy neighbor" which i always wondered what the hell that song might've sounded like and what the hell the lyrics may have been....

but nobody's ever been able to find any hint of dave doing anything with 5150 tunes...

I remember two seperate interviews from Eddie and Dave years ago. Both mentioned in their interviews that one of the last songs that they ever recorded together was a cover of "In The Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett. What I cannot remember if that song was a leftover from 1984 or if it was supposed to be on 5150. Does anyone know?

I remember an interview with Eddie where he stated that they couldn't get Dave to come down to even work on the songs. He said he came down and listened to the music, but never did much with it.
Of course, Eddie has been known to stretch the truth a bit in the past, so you never know.
I find it hard to believe that if there was a song with Dave singing that it wouldn't be on the 'net somewhere.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I also remember an interview with Dave that stated that he and Ted Templeman sat around in front of 5150 waiting for Ed to get out of bed. I know that Dave did get a few songs rolling because both Dave and Eddie have stated that in several interviews over the years.

Well, really, if you think about it, Good Enough sounds kind of Davish. The lyrics seem that they were Dave Halen aimed. I can imagine him singing Good Enough easily. Add an "OOWW" and the occasional "OOOUUWWWAAA!" between every few words, BAM! Especially the "Rack-a-what? Well I'll have sumaTHAT!!!!" part, except Dave probably would've said something much funnier than that...or made it sound funnier.

I seem to recall reading many years ago that "In The Midnight Hour" was done somewhere between Diver Down and 1984.

Yes! I've often said I would've love to hear Dave lyrical interpretation to the music of "Good Enough", "5150", "Best Of Both World" and "Summer Nights". I can imagine where the problems came in with music to "Love Walks In" and "Dreams". I can't hear Dave singin' any over this music.

Here's what I know that I can add:

In the Midnight Hour - is was planned to be included on BOTH Diver Down and 1984 but decided against at the last minute.

Good Enough - it most likely was slated to be on the next Dave-era album after 1984, since the music appeared in the 1984 movie The Wild Life.

"5150" - In the Oct. '87 issue of Guitar Player, Sam and Ed mentioned that during an overnight hotel stay in NY, Ed wrote this at 2 or 3am. He immediately called up Sam and played it over the phone for him, so I'm assuming that the song as we know it didn't exist at that point.

But...there was a song called "5150 Special" planned (and possibly already written) to be recorded for the 1984 album (http://www.vhtrading.com/1984album.shtml). It's not known if it was fully written and recorded, or if it bares any resemblence to the track that appears on the 5150 album.

And...Dave never got fired from VH in 1985. It was (at the time) an amicable split and both parties agree to this in interviews. Roth quit. The ONLY debate between "fired vs. quit" exists around Sammy's departure in 1996.
