Categories for a desert Island
Sure that something similar gets done every so often but I'm bored off work with a knackered back so....
In the same vein as the desert island discs, if you could only choose one album from each BROAD category of music to take with you, what would it be?
Just for fun:
ROCK Led Zepellin - Physical graffiti
POP Gerard de Palmas - Marche dans le sable
JAZZ John Coltrane - A love supreme
CLASSICAL Brahms - 4 symphonies (conducted by Herbert Von Karajan)
ALTERNATIVE/PUNK The stranglers - The Raven
COUNTRY The eagles - Hotel California (does that count as country?)
SOUL Nina Simone - Classic Nina
RAP Please fuck off presently before I teach you English - the (s) hits
BLUES Robert johnson - Complete
Can't think of any more broad categories except that shit computerised dance bollocks but I don't think that counts as music unless you're interrogating someone who has been force fed hallucogenic paranoia inducing pills and you fancy a quick boogie between punches and fingernail removals...
Like I said, bored as fuckity.

I just cannot get into that album. I bought it, I love "Miles runs the Voodoo down" and am pretty partial to "Spanish key" too, but I hate the production. Overall, he's my favourite artist, simply because of all the people who played onhis records (esp. trane, Bird, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter) and I buy a shit load of his stuff but I just can't......
...MUST TRY HARDER. (repeat)

Yeah, I didn't get that either. "electronic blues" anyone?
Anyway, I did say BROAD categories since I know we can break down all into little bits....
eg. Jazz: Bebop, cool jazz, free jazz, modern jazz, jazz fusion, modal jazz etc
Think BIG brush strokes, otherwise we get to take a hundred albums each on this island and that's just plain fucking cheating.....
...and it might get a bit crowded

Don't know if it is "blues" (not a flatted third in sight if you ask me) but it certainly is "blue" so I guess you get in on a technicality. eg. the difference between can't and cunt is only one letter too. (plus a fiddly apostrophe thingy)
OK, Get on the boat then, looks like we have some good tunes.

Yeah, love that movie, esp the original cut with the voice over and the real light ending (sorry purists) and a great soundtrack too.
Still reckon one of the best film soliloquoys ever was Rutger's "tears in rain" speech just before he dies. Right up there with "To be or not to be" (Hamlet) or even "How did that dead hooker get in my bed" (Hamlet 2 - The Revenge). Tragic bit of cinema. Harrison Fords best role too.
