Kid arrested for playing with Christmas present
    POSTED: 9:45 a.m. EST, December 6, 2006

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- A fed-up mother had her 12-year-old son arrested for allegedly rummaging through his great-grandmother's things and playing with his Christmas present early.

The mother called police Sunday after learning her son had disobeyed orders and repeatedly taken a Game Boy from its hiding place at his great-grandmother's house next door and played it.

He was arrested on petty larceny charges, taken to the police station in handcuffs and held until his mother picked him up after church. (Watch when the mom plans to give up custody of the boy Video )

"My grandmother went out of her way to lay away a toy and paid on this thing for months," said the boy's mother, Brandi Ervin. "It was only to teach my son a lesson. He's been going through life doing things ... and getting away with it."

Police did not release the boy's name.

The mother said that her son was found in the last year to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but that his medicine does not seem to help.

She said he faces an expulsion hearing at his school Wednesday. Rock Hill Police Capt. Mark Bollinger said the boy took a swing at a police officer assigned to the school last month. He has been suspended from school since then.

The boy's case will be presented to Department of Juvenile Justice officials in York County, who will decide what happens to him, Bollinger said. His mother hopes he can attend a program that will finally scare him straight.

"It's not even about the Christmas present," she said. "I only want positive things out of it. ... There's no need for him to act this way. I'd rather call myself than someone else call for him doing something worse than this."

We need more parents like this....
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

I read this in this morning's paper. It's truly frightening that one's parenting skills have degraded over the years (or simply never existed in the first place) that one ends up resorting to contacting an outside source to invoke discipline in one's child.

On the other hand, one must applaud the fact that an effort was at least made at some point. Sadly, it's more than likely too little, too late.

What is unfortunate is if he got his butt spanked when he was younger, then the parents would have probably been arrested for child abuse. Society is tying a parents hands when it comes to disciplining their own children. And I will preface my comment by stating there is a difference between a few swats on a child's behind and beating them.

It sounds like the mom is trying her best not to have him arrested for B&E later in life which is a possibility if he's already taking a swing at a police officer.

I have a friend that did something similar with her son, although he was a bit younger (10, I think). She was friends with several police officers, and he did something michevious in the neighborhood (can't remember what, exactly, but doesn't look as serious as this story). Well, mom "called the cops", he spent a couple minutes alone in the back of the police car, and was literally told he was on "double secret probation", which he believed was real for quite some time. In this case, it worked like a charm.

Calling the police was a bit excessive.

They should have just returned the toy and told him he was no longer getting it for Christmas.

Probably for most kids but this one has already taken a shot at a police officer. Sometimes drastic measures need to be taken to try to get through.

Uh, I'd say based on this the kid shouldn't see a Christmas present again until roughly age 25.

    Little fucker.

I had an 11 year old in my office last spring that was terrible. His mother couldn't control him and he feared noone including the police. He was using some profanities and such and I had him sit on the bench just outside my office as I contacted his parent. During this process he proceeded to tell those who walked by that he was just waiting on the dumbass principal to get his ass off of the phone. A coach brought him back into my office and told me of his behavior at which point the kid asked "are you a coach?" to which the coach replied "yes". The kid then proceeded to tell the coach "well if you are a coach how about you go coach somebody and get the hell out of my business." Unfortunately I was required to call my campus resource officer into the office. He proceeded to smart off to the officer at which point the officer threw him across my desk and arrested the kid. The kid then told the officer that "he needed to tighten the cuffs up because he didn't have his circulation cut off yet."

At the county juvenile facility he stated he was hungry and demanded a donut because he knew all the cops were good for was eating donuts.

I realize that sometimes when you read these articles in the papers etc, things do seem excessive, but you really do not know the full story. Some kids are just bad. Most of it is their environment, but sometimes things just are not right in some kids heads.

Sounds like he could use an afternoon locked in a roomful of hardened convicts and a film crew.

This happens all the time in my family.

I once spilled milk on the floor when I was 7 and my Dad wanted the courts to give me 25 to life. Well long story short they gave me a plea bargain and needless to say... I learned my lesson.

This is the stupidest story I think... I have... ever heard. This mother is mentally deranged. I know this is coming from an 18 year old. But when you can call the cops and have your kid arrested for looking at a present... you got problems. Discipline is a whole other story. If I were this kid I wouldn't let my mother forget about this for the rest of my life. "Remember the time you had me arrested for looking at the Christmas present... good time eh, Mom."

Edit 1 Min Later: This kid took a swing at a police officer... lock his fucking ass up. Who does he think he is. I didn't read that part of the article before I wrote the stuff above.
