If you've been following the story about the ex-KGB agent/activist who was poisoned and died in England this week then you know that the Scottland Yard investgation found two British Airways passenger planes that have traces of radiation linked to the assasination.

Okay, so I have one question:

How the fuck does someone board a passenger plane in 2006 with radioactive material?

I'll follow that up with this question:

How does someone land at Heathrow Airport, go through customs, baggage pickup and walk through the terminal to the Tube or taxi with radioactive material?

England has more enemies than the US does, why the fuck don't they have any kind of detection equipment for radiation?

I point this out because if the UK doesn't have their shit together then you know the US is even worse.

Interesting. And yep I guess you're the only one who caught that, at least around here. I've been following this one as well. Didn't they poison a candidate who was running against Putin with another type of poison?

I actually wondered the same things Axx. I worked at a nuclear facility & we got scanned upon entering & exiting RZ areas. Far as I know, there is no radiation scan in airports & since it's odorless, tasteless etc, unless you're looking for it w/ the proper tools, you ain't gonna find it.

Yeah I remember about the other guy being poisoned too. Seems to me that too many things gotta go right to poison w/o getting caught though. Hell, there's a pack of stray dogs roaming my neck of the woods & I haven't been able to get them yet. I'd like to think that a Russian spy is smarter than a stray dog you know?

ok...i had my husband explain some of this to me, so i'm gonna put him to the task of replying to this thread. he majored in nuclear engineering in college and now works in nuclear medicine as a medical physicist.

I was watching a show last night and they said that they have a 90% failure rate during tests of the airport security systems. That makes me feel more secure, how about you?

Po-210 is an alpha emitter. It is a high energy alpha (over 5 MeV) compared to you getting a chest x-ray at about 0.120 MeV. The difference is the particle itself. X-rays and gammarays can easily go through most materials such as standard walls, human bodies, etc. It takes a material such as lead to absorb the x-rays or gammarays. Most radiation detection equipment being used is primarily designed for the detection of the x-rays and gammarays. An alpha particle can be stopped by a piece of paper or even an outer layer of dead skin. Thus, it would be very easy for someone to get that material through secuity screeners. One thing to keep in mind regarding the alphas is the external exposure is a non-issue. The intenalization of the material is an entirely different story. The localized internal dose from Po-210 is massive. A few milligrams would likely be fatal. The half-life of Po-210 is aobut 140 days, so even these areas that are contaminated will eventually become nonradioactive due to the decay of the material.

I am interested though as to why so many areas are contaminated. Still haven't heard the theories to support why this is going on. Interesting times...............Enough work, time for a beer!

Doh! Alpha particles!

I'd forgotten the briefing I'd got on them (Depleated Uranium shells give off alpha particle residue), they said that Alpha particles are the Pouges of radiation.

To put it another way, Kevin Federline is the Alpha Particle of talent.

The stuff used to poison the Russian guy is called - Po 210 - (No, I could tell you anything about it) is an Alpha emitter. That's why it could be smuggled safely onto an airplane, Alpha waves are weak in that that can be stopped by paper, so an envelope or even a rolled up newspaper could mask it's pressence. So it's a great poison because it involves only basic handling skills to transport and then to deploy.

The fact that it's been found on two airliners tells me that the guy who transported it from Russia didn't even know he was carrying it.

But if you swallow Po-210 you're dead meat.

Hence the Kevin Federline joke: No detectable talent, yet he destroyed Britney Spears because she ..uh..took him internally. If you know what I mean.
