    Default Is my neck shot?

Hey, all. I picked up an OLP MM1 a few weeks ago at a scratch & dent Musician's Friend. I did a stripe job and put a Floyd on it. I'm all done with it now but I got major fret buzz. The Floyd is parallel with the body and I've adjusted the tuss rod. If I tighten it it sraightens the neck and makes the action closer but it buzzes like hell. But when I back off and loosen the rod, it eventually stops buzzing, but the strings are a mile off the fretboard- especially at the higher frets. It was like that when I bought it too, but I thought it just needed some adjustment. I think the neck may be twisted or something. I can't really tell. Is my neck shot?

P.S. Will an EBMM neck fit on an OLP body? Are the bolt paterns the same?

If the Floyd is flush mounted, the neck is going to need to be shimmed to adjust for the that. You might be better off taking it to a qualified guitar tech to shim it and set you intonation/action. Also, no offense, but it's offensive to even consider putting an EBMM neck on an OLP. The OLP's are very nice guitars for the $$$, but you could buy about a half dozen for what it's going to cost for and EBMM neck. Plus, unless you're buying one off of someone selling a used one, you ain't buying one anyway. Unless you currently have an EBMM, the company won't sell you a new neck. You have to send your old neck back in order to receive a replacement, which will cost almost as much as a new guitar.

Damn! Thats why I love this place so much. The shim worked beatifully. I actually thought about that before because the guitar that I robbed the Floyd from had it's neck shimmed. Thanks G Proud. I know the real Musicman is in a different leauge as the OLP copy, but I was just curious if the neck would fit. Actually the OLP neck is very comfortable to play. This is just a fun project guitar that I don't care too much if I fuck up ya know? I was actually suprised how much I like playing it. And it sounds good too.

How thick is the shim you used, and what did you use for it? I have a VERY similar issue.

Glad I could help. Also, I didn't mean to come off like an a**hole or anything. I had an OLP that I had to get rid of due to other GAS issues, but yeah, it's a great playing, feeling, put together guitar for the money. Good luck with it and enjoy.

It's about as thick as a guitar pick. You could actually cut a pick in half and line up the two pieces at the back of the neck slot on the body. I was suprised it made that much difference, but it did. Like I said, I used the shim that I robbed out of a Strat, which I also robbed the Floyd Rose from. It's just a small, thin piece of plastic.

I used the guitar pick trick on my olp. I used two picks and cut the pointed half off of each. It worked great. Two months later the ping floyd rose I installed is still in tune which gives me more time to drink some Smoking Loon.
Now comes my favorite part of the show. It's my favorite part of the whole evening. Actually Zaxxon, your pictures on the replica thread were what I used as a template for mine. It looked killer, so I had to do one myself. I wasn't origionally going to put a Floyd on it. But I had a real Floyd on a Strat that I don't really ever play, so I said screw it, I only paid a $140 for the OLP and if I screw it up, oh well. But it turned out pretty well for my first such project. Now I don't have the urge to butcher my Wolfie (thankfully). If I knew how to post pictures I'd post one.

Thanks man that's awesome. I'd like to see it. I used my olp cause I have a axis on order. I used Bretts post on page 4 of the EVH Replica page of this site for the stripes sizes plus thos pictures of Ed in front of the truck. I also used the forums at eddievanhalen.com to get some ideas of what paint to use and how to do it. I really want to do a frankenstrat but it seems hard as hell. I might just save up and buy a meanstreet one. I have a meanstreet 5150 relic and it's freakin awesome looking and a sweet guitar to play.
