Threads : The Movie

Back in the very early eighties, when we really did expect to be nuked out of existence by the end of the week, some English filmmakers got together with some scientific help to make a film, called "Threads", to try to show exactly what mutually assured destruction meant.
The idea was to show as realistically as possible the effects of a nuclear war by focusing not on the leaders and decision makers, but by concentrating on the average person in the street and how it would affect their lives.
So part drama, part documentary, here it is on youtube in 16 parts.
Do not expect nice glossy filmmaking or heroic acts or massive special effects or anything normally associated with the movies. This is about as depressing as you can get but it just has to be watched at least once.

This series premiered in September, it's about a small Kansas town dealing with the aftermath of a nuclear war. It's been really good so far.
