Mother Charged In Death Of Month-Old Infant

A woman has been charged in the death of her infant daughter, who authorities believe might have been put in a microwave oven.

China Arnold, 26, was arrested at her home Monday on a charge of aggravated murder, police Sgt. Gary White said. Her month-old daughter, Paris Talley, died in August 2005.

"We have reason to believe and scientific evidence to support that a microwave oven might have been involved in the death of this child," said Ken Betz, director of the Montgomery County coroner's office.

The baby was dead when Arnold brought her to Children's Medical Center on Aug. 30 of last year, White said. The death was ruled a homicide caused by hyperthermia, or high body temperature, due to thermal injury.

Betz said the case was difficult. "We're in an area where there's not a lot of scientific research on the effect of microwave on human beings," he said. He added, there were no external signs as there would have been with scalding water.

Arnold had been arrested initially and later released. Greg Flannagan, a spokesman for the county prosecutor's office, said there was a lengthy investigation before prosecutors determined there was enough probable cause to issue an arrest warrant, which was filed Wednesday.

Arnold was being held in the Montgomery County jail.

Don't take the post literally... We just need to be more "creative" in punishment, like public humiliation for example... My point is jail time and fines are not enough of a deterrent these days... Look at the amount of repeat offenders... It's sickening...

True, yet it won't bring the child back. The torture will only make us feel better, some recourse from the horror of situations like this that occur with all too much frequency each day.

In the end it solves nothing. Fear of punishment is a foregone conclusion when folk behave without a conscience in the first place.

Who's to say the space-cadet is even capable of feeling? If she's capable of setting her baby on "cook", she more than likely is beyond human capacity for accepting responsibility for her deeds.

And that in and of itself is another thing becoming all too frequent in the United Staes today.

I suppose my knee-jerk reaction may have been a bit strong but you have to understand my point. As a society, we need a better way of dealing with these sickening crimes. But I do NOT believe putting this woman in a state hospital for observation fits the crime. There has to be a way to suppliment our justice system with the notion of "an eye for an eye". Do I personally have the answer? No. But there is one out there....
